The principles of flight made easy to understand, even fascinating, to pilots and technicians Most pilots and flight students wince at the mention of the term "aerodynamics" because most courses and books dealing with the subject do so using complicated scientific theory and intricate mathematical formulas. And yet, an understanding of aerodynamics is essential to the people who operate and maintain airplanes. This unique introductory guide, which sold more than 20,000 copies in its first edition, proves that the principles of flight can be easy to understand, even fascinating, to pilots and technicians who want to know how and why an aircraft behaves as it does. Avoiding technical jargon and complex calculations, Hubert "Skip" Smith demonstrates how aerodynamic factors affect all aircraft in terms of lift, thrust, drag, in-air performance, stability, and control. Readers also get an inside look at how modern aircraft are designed-including all the steps in the design process, from concept to test flight and the reasoning behind them. This edition features expanded coverage of aircraft turning and accelerated climb performance, takeoff velocities, load and velocity-load-factors, area rules, and hypersonic flight, as well as the latest advances in laminar flow airfoils, wing and fuselage design, and high-performance lightplanes. Question and answer sections are added for classroom use. Review: The best book on explaing aerodynacis I have ever read. Highly recommended. - Usually books on this subject are written for graduate-level comprehension, full of formulae and bursting with technical expressions (but without any explanations). This one is different. OK you may have to read some sections a few times and refer to the related simple diagrams, but, it is understandable by someone with less than an 'O' level in physics. But, do not think that it will not be of value to the more qualified out there, the author corrects many long held misconceptions about some aerodynamic principles and explores these misconceptions in an entertaining style.. If I can level any crtiicism it is that a few of the diagrams referred to in the text, as part of an explanation, are not on adjacent pages to the related text, but, that is it. Review: Nice introductory book - Having no engineering background, just an aviation passion and having read a few books about aviation, i bought this book to learn the basics of aerodynamics. I choose this book since i thought that illustrations would really help me understand and this is mostly true. The book is really easy to read and understand and pictures and figures help a lot. Starting for the basics, theories and laws and covering a variety of subjects to even more practical issues. Recommended read

An Easy to Understand primer on aeronautics and design
Had a lot of fun with this book. It doesn't do a lot (if any? it's been a while) on structure but introduces the reader to the iterative approach to design and is a good ballpark start for someone who wants to experiment with ideas.

Excellent
My 12 year-old son is able to read and understand the book. He has a new appreciation for and fascination with the science of flight. The book must be well written for a 6th grade student to gain so much understanding.

Complex topic Comprehensibly explained
This book is a fantastic read for future aviators, aviation professionals, and enthusiasts alike! H.C. Smith has a unique gift of explaining a complex topic in the most comprehensible way possible. The author assumes no previous knowledge about the subject of Aerodynamics from the reader. He introduces each topic by discussing the fundamentals first and then goes on to discuss the topic in increasing detail. Comprehensive matters become clear, through “piece by piece” explanation. As a pilot, I have previously studied Aerodynamics. Doing advanced aviation training, I chose this book to get a deeper understanding. It not only significantly increased my “book” knowledge about Aerodynamics, yet also fostered a deep understanding. As an extra, it was simply pleasurable to read. I can recommend this excellent book to anybody, who is interested in Aerodynamics to any extent. Within only 300 pages, a remarkable level of complexity is discussed in a very comprehensible manner. It is books like these, that illustrate pilots the effects of their actions, and contribute to safer skies!
