Nice but Dated
This ia a well done but dated discussion on the immune system. The challenge of the immune system is that almost daily we learned more about one part after another. Immune system therapy is becoming a daily part of oncology and understanding the various elements is critical to anyone practicing or associated with medicine. This book is a window in time. It reflects an understanding at a specific moment. Its weak point is lack of graphics since in many cases I have found one picture is worth 10,000 words. In addition following on the innate and adaptive system and their mechanisms and communications is a game of following the bouncing ball. It can be complicated but if well presented is almost symphonic. For anyone interested in the current status this is not for you. As a well done timed presentation this is excellent.

excellent review of immunology from the prospective of a giant
One probably needs some extent of background in biological sciences to fully understand the content, but it does't prevent anyone who is interested in immunology to get education and enlightenment from Dr. Paul's insight in the book. I personally doubt anyone is better than the author, a giant in the field, in walking us through the history of immunology and give future prospective. It is not intended as a textbook. Instead, it is a personal review of the field from the eyes of a giant in immunology. Highly recommended!

Good introduction for the lay reader
Good introduction for the lay reader. Would have been helpful to have more illustrations to map the complex interactions of the immune system. I will be reading this book more than once to catch all the nuances.

Excellent guide to the state of science as it stood ...
Excellent guide to the state of science as it stood at the date of publication, written with care and precision by one of the leading scientists in the field. You do need some biological sciences background to get the best from this book, but it's heartily recommended all the same.

Disappointed
Poorly written. Writing is unclear, with run-on sentences and confusing descriptions. Simple, commonly-known terms are described in detail, while esoteric terms are introduced without any description at all. The author has a poor understanding of what people know, whether they are informed laypeople or professionals. Also, the author is obsessed with "name-dropping" and scientific awards. Spends a lot of time fawning over scientific personalities as if they are deities or something. Its ridiculous.I have several immunology textbooks and they are more interesting and informative to read.

Five Stars
For those professors who teaches immunology the biography of Dr.William E. Paul is very good

Paul has shown his fantastic quality as a teacher
I have read this last book of Bill Paul (1936-2015) with immense pleasure. As D. Baltimore already said, the novice can learn immunology from this book, while the professional will appreciate Dr. Paul's judgment and insight into the achievements of this fascinating domain of biology and medicine. As a professional, I knew Dr. Paul's didactic qualities from his seminal book Fundamental Immunology (the "Paul" for insiders). Also in his last work, Paul has shown his fantastic quality as a teacher, recalling in a very accessible way, the major discoveries in the field of Immunology. From 19th century work on rabies vaccine of Louis Pasteur to 21st century work on systems biology. One of Paul's most important contributions was probably the identification of IL-4 in 1982. This work turned out to be relevant to the study of type 2 immunity and IgE production and is having a major impact on the treatment of allergic inflammatory diseases (Chapter 27).This book is a tribute to the many scientists that helped to shape the field of basic and applied immunology. Sciences progresses by standing on the shoulders of giants. Paul was one of them, we will remember him.
