A slight improvement from the DVD Edition.
This Blu-ray edition is somewhat austere but video looks better, same as subtitling since it looks crisp in comparison with the DVD released a couple of year ago, it really looks better on HD TV's. The packaging is quite simple and the design of the disc labels is not as pretty as in the DVD Collection Edition, but it's a must if you loved Mai Hime and want to have something more up to date.

AWESOME !
I finally watched through all of the Blu-ray's for this series.Let me start by saying I am slightly biased as this is one of my favorite anime series, but still, I'll be honest and spoiler free.Again, as in my review for the Zwei / Sifr set, this entire series (Hime, Otome, Zwei, and Sifr) does have some skin and mature themes in it, so some parents may want to keep that in mind. Also, it may be helpful to consider this a completely different story than the other series installments. See my second to last paragraph for a little more on that. The physical product itself is rather plain. It does have a slipcase but as usual it's essentially the same as the cover inside. There is no insert with this set, just the slip case, the case with the cover, and the discs. There are 3 Blu-ray discs and 4 DVD discs, all of which are also very plain. They have the My-Hime logo but no other artwork. I personally would've preferred some artwork and an insert but I don't think it was necessary either. I'm really happy to just have these on Blu-ray and DVD in the same package and finally in the US. All that said, it would have been nice if they chose some better cover art. This is one of those "don't judge a book by it's cover" situations. I suggest viewing the trailers and previews that Funimation (the US distributor) have put up, to get a better idea of what to expect from this series.Video quality, is great IMO. I understand people mentioning there isn't a gigantic difference in quality, however for some of us, it's still very noticeable from DVD to Blu-ray, especially putting them side by side. The other thing to consider, is when this was originally animated. Current standards aside, this was aired from 2004-2005, which means it would've been in development when DVD had just barely become a standard, which means this was also PRE popularity of Blu-ray, 1080p, and 16:9.... and we're already standing on the 4k wave now. So for what it is, the quality is great. The same goes for My-Otome which was 2005-2006. The series didn't get a real upgrade until Zwei and Sifr. The menu's are also quite bland. Not to make excuses, but this really isn't the most popular anime series, so I really couldn't expect much and I don't really mind as long as the quality of the actual video is good, which it is.The audio quality is also great, however the soundtrack will make you feel like you went back to the 80's. This is common in even modern anime so, it doesn't bother me at all. As for the dub, IMO English dubs usually have a tendency to make the anime feel corny due to the way names are pronounced, liberties with accents, and over enunciation of pretty much every line. There are some exceptions but this is not one of them. I listened to a few episodes with the dub but it's about the same as every other anime I've watched. I strongly suggest sticking to the original voices and just reading the subtitles. The extra's are mostly just on the Blu-ray. There's a directors cut for episode 26 and some textless songs, trailers etc. that aren't on the DVD. However the Character Featurettes are actually added into the episodes so at least those are on the DVD version.My-Hime is the first of the anime releases in this series. However, it would be easiest to just consider this "the original" and the Otome arc as a reboot. The characters are more or less the same in many aspects (with the exception of one), but it's basically like they used the same characters to tell a noticeably different yet somewhat similar story. So watch this one separate of all the others to avoid confusion.Overall I'm really happy with this purchase. I got this direct from Funimation pre-order, however IMO this is worth the purchase for anyone that's a fan of the series, regardless of where you pick it up. But I'd suggest getting this before prices go up. I doubt we'll see another release of this again. Even if we get another installment, it's unlikely any of the current ones will get re-released.
