Actually the yellow is a rubber case and it comes with a nylon Velcro case. Not very hard but the rubber protection works great.

In outdoor conditions, how far can you see the red dot?

The PLS3 Red 60523N has a working range of up to 100 feet, indoor. It is not recommended for outdoor applications.

Does this laser just do dots or does it do lines also?

The PLS 3 will only output dots (points). If you are looking for a device that does both dots and continuous lines check out the PLS 6R or 6G.
