This new, thoroughly revised edition of the acclaimed Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language incorporates the major developments in language study which have taken place since the mid 1990s. Two main new areas have been added: the rise of electronic communication in all its current forms from email to texting, and the crisis affecting the world's languages, of which half are thought to be so seriously endangered that they will die out this century. • All language statistics have been updated, and additional information provided about their linguistic affiliation • All topics involving technology have been revised to take account of recent developments, notably in phonetics, language disability, and computing • Maps have been revised to include new countries or country names • Special attention has been paid to fast-moving areas such as language teaching and learning • The text design has been completely updated with many new illustrations throughout Review: Brought for University - This book is beneficial for any Linguistic student. I brought it 2nd hand for £5- It looked brand new. Review: A must have book for language lovers - People who are interested in language or linguistics would definitely love this book. David Crystal explains a number of features of language very nicely in this book. Language is like people, it lives, it changes and it dies. Amazing fact is that all the language are different, yet they are alos similar in some sort of way and those could be explored through this book. In present days, interenet is playing a major role on the language change and that has also been discussed by the author. The book is easy to read and has lots of illustrations to accompany the discussion. Just like any other encyclopedia, this book is also large in size and heavy. So those who want to read it on their journy by train or by bus, would not find it comfortable. However the book is so interesting that it worth to allocate time just to be with the book and read it properly by sitting on a desk and a chair.

Easily the best introduction to linguistics
This book is a true classic and a joy to read. There simply is no better single-volume introduction to linguistics. The chapters are short and topic-focussed and the illustrations are superb. All-in-all there's nothing not to like. Anyone interested in languages should read this book.

良くレビューを読んでおくべきでした。
The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language

An amazing journey and a magnificent book...
This book is truly amazing and worth every penny. The scope is enormous, and yet the reader never feels either overwhelmed or deprived of information on the topic no matter how deep Crystal goes. The graphics and inserts help to make the enormous amount of sheer knowledge and information it contains more digestible. A must-own for students and teachers of language and literature, and highly recommended for anyone interested in anything and everything related to language. A fascinating, beautiful book with amazing, full-color graphics, photos, charts, maps and more in addition to the engaging and very readable prose that underpins the work. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because I purchased a new paperback copy and the one I received seems lightly used. The gloss on the jacket is dull and smudged in some places, the top rear corner is dog-eared, the bottom edge pressed and creased in places, with a noticeable crease and wrinkling on the rear jacket in a place that suggests it has been perused more than once. Shipping was very fast and the price is more than worth the product. All in all, I would happily buy this same book again and am satisfied with the product. Not only is it a great addition to my library that I will always cherish, but one that I will surely read from cover-to-cover and refer to again and again in my teaching practice and ongoing learning.

O melhor
