After two failed attempts with unknown-brand smart locks, I finally landed on this Schlage model—and it was worth it. Here’s what I’ve learned through trial and error: Noise Level Matters Many deadbolt-style smart locks are loud. Some are so noisy they’ll make your pets look up in alarm. One of the cheaper locks I tried made my daughter-in-law say it sounded like a dentist’s drill. Lesson learned: noise is part of the package with many of these, so choose wisely. This Schlage makes no noise. The noise appears to be associated with the deadbolt locks, rather than the lever locks. This is a lever lock, which is by far my preferred choice. I learned the hard way. Know Your Must-Haves Make sure the lock you buy has the features you want. Don’t settle. I was really hoping for a fingerprint reader, but this particular Schlage model didn’t include it. The version that does? Nearly $600—twice the cost. For me, that was not a dealbreaker. With the two models I tried that had the fingerprint reader, any bit of moisture on my fingers would prevent the reader from working. You've got to do something with your finger; it might as well be to press four numbers gently. Build Quality & Installation Right out of the box, you can tell this is a pro-grade product. It’s heavy, solid, and feels like it will last. Installation wasn’t quite as smooth as I’d hoped, but that had more to do with my door setup than the lock itself. I had to chisel away some molding around a glass window because the lock housing was slightly wider than others I’ve installed. Schlage might consider a slimmer profile for future models. I also ran into some frustration seating the back unit. The internal wire connector kept getting in the way—it would’ve been an easy engineering fix if there were just a small space to accommodate the cable. I did have to lift a little gold bar to loosen the cable to give me a tad more to work with - that helped seat the back to the mount. After a little effort and patience, I got it mounted correctly. Connectivity & Setup Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone worked instantly. Wi-Fi was another story. I use an Eero router, which broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously. Some devices (like my Leviton switches) automatically pick the right band. This lock didn’t. After some online digging, I learned how to temporarily disable the 5 GHz band via the Eero app. Once I did that, the lock connected immediately. The app itself is excellent—setting access codes through it is a breeze. Compared to the old-school button-pushing rituals of code programming, this is night and day. Final Thoughts Despite a few quirks—most of which could be resolved with better design—I’m still giving this lock five stars. Compared to the flimsy, lightweight alternatives I tried earlier, this one is in a league of its own. It feels premium, performs well, includes the batteries, and doesn’t require a separate hub (as it should be—Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in). Hopefully, Schlage will smooth out the minor issues in a future version. But for now, this is a classy lock from a classy company, and I’m glad I made the switch.

These are the easiest and most useful of all the techie gadgets I own! I've had several of these locks on my properties and this is the third Encode I've purchased. They work with all kinds of doors, every Internet provider, are super easy to install, thanks to great directions, and work great. I never have to worry if I forgot to lock the door. I can simply go to the app and check. I can also give codes to my contractors and my adult children. The locks are incredibly secure, too! I never have to worry about getting locked out, either, as they all come with a key, just in case the battery dies or is weak. That rarely happens because there is an indicator on the app that gives me a percentage of the battery left. They're not bad on the wallet, either. My last one was about $250 and fit seamlessly into my one hole door. Another one had the separate lock and handle. The best part about these is that they're made so well that I never have to worry about product failure. Schlage has the best customer support department, as well, and they've never made me feel inept any time I've ever called, even when it turned out to be something stupid I should have remembered how to do [that + at the top to add locks, yeah...DOH!]. All in all, I'm sold on Schlage, their locks and the quality, ease of installation, the price, and the service, and no other brands even turn my head anymore.

The lock is very sturdy and easy to install. It seems very durable and has a hassle free mechanism. The battery life is modest, 3 months and running, still with almost 80% battery life. For the price, it is value for money because you know you are going to get a product of good quality. The wifi connection is a hit or miss at times, but not a big issue. The keypad is very sensitive to touch. Overall, a dependable lock with good qualities. A must buy for me.

Love these! I now have 3 of them. They’re pricey but they do the job. At any time I can check the app on my phone to see the status of the locks. Especially before going to bed. Eliminates the need to go upstairs because you can do everything remotely through the app. Easy to use, program, add/delete users. I can see who’s been going in and out and check the status of the batteries so I can change them in time. Holds up well by the salt air. Looks great and has 2 styles to choose from. Most importantly it works great and I feel very secure with these locks.

I recently purchased the Matte Black Schlage Encode Century smart lock. The installation process was relatively straightforward, and programming it via the Schlage app was simple. However, integrating it with Google Assistant was kind of a pain, as it repeatedly prompted me to install the Google Assistant app instead of connecting directly through the Google Home app by adding it as linked service. I do have several concerns about the build quality and its packaging. For the price, I would have expected the lock to include two keys, as is standard with traditional locks, but it only came with one. While I know that the keypad is the primary feature, an extra key would have been appreciated. Additionally, removing the key from the cylinder for the first time was pretty difficult. The lock was shipped in its original manufacturer's box without additional packaging and wasn't sealed, which left it susceptible to damage during transit. Although all parts were present, the box arrived in poor condition, highlighting some design flaws. The latch release button is made of flimsy aluminum which was bent in transit along with its connecting posts. Since I already had it mostly installed, I decided to repair it rather than returning it. The button is mostly decorative and repairing and reattaching was a little time-consuming, however I managed to get it re-attached. Lastly, the paint on the handles was chipped in several places which raises concerns about the durability of the finish, especially on the outdoor portion with the key cylinder. Since I installed it at the rear of my home, I'm not too concerned about that, but it may be something to think about if you're thinking of if purchasing the matte black version. If the paint continues to chip or fade, I can address it, but it shouldn’t happen so easily on a premium product. Overall, the lock works well so far, but these issues are a little disappointing. If I encounter any other issues in the future, I’ll update this review.

WORST LOCK EVER, BUYER BEWARE. I rarely write a review like this but for $270.00 this is hardly worthy of its one star. Set up was complicated, my friend has a wifi lock and lives it for letting contractors in with a one time code. I wasn't sold on the brand so I ordered a wifi one that came with a reputable name. That was my first mistake assuming that because it said Schlage it would be a “Prime” product from a trusted company. Well the prime product it was not. It was complicated and didn't work shortly after it was put in. It would lock us out of our home without anyone touching the app or the lock. It malfunctioned shortly after the 30 day return window was up, go figure! I had two IT specialists over here (at separate times) who also are home builders. They could not figure out the malfunction of this lock, it acted like it was processed. It would lock for no reason, and you could not open it even with your code. It also would go completely dead, even with new batteries in it. I am glad that I had left my window unlocked (unbeknown to me) when it first started to malfunction, and after that I left my door open as I couldn't take the chance of the lock not opening. I reached out to customer service twice and they just had me reset it and again and again……….till I finally realized this lock was not fixable and I did not want to waste any more lost time on a poor product. I am done. Since I am out of my 30 day return period, I am now out all that frustration, time spent on it, not to mention 270.00 and a lot of headaches. I will update this post should Schlage reach out to me, but I am done spending anymore wasted phone time with them or having people come over to see if they could fix it, to NO avail. Only brings frustration and lost time that I will never get back. So if you are looking for a Wifi lock, stay clear if this one. Also the key pad was not user friendly. I perfer raised buttons that you actually feel and see when you touch them. Poor design.

We purchased this lock for an Airbnb properly and it’s the best thing we could’ve done! The smart lock is definitely smart!! We can set up multiple codes at the same time. You can make the codes permanent or temporary with specific date ranges which is perfect for short term rentals. The lock has an auto locking feature so it locks automatically behind you when you leave the house. It uses 4 AA batteries which we probably change 2 times a year. In the Schlage app: 1. You manage all access codes 2. Can see the lock history of who enters and the time they enter and when they leave and the door is locked. 3. Can get notifications of when the lock is accessed 4. Can label the names of your locks if have multiple locks. Highly recommend this lock. It’s sturdy and well worth it.

We have been using this lock for about six months now on our vacation rental, and it works great. It syncs nicely with the Airbnb app, providing new access codes for each booking. We also have a couple user-specific access codes, which is handy for monitoring status, double checking the cleaner has been there, etc. It’s great to be able to check lock status within the Schlage app. Batteries have lasted about six months before needing replacement, which seems reasonable to me.

Truly appreciate this purchase. Easy install. We had some cold temperature -20 celsius and no issues. I was concerned with operation in cold weather but up til now works as described. Thank you
