Will this fit a McAlpine bath waste.

If it's the same sort of nachanism I would think so, this item seems to be a universal fitting, If you dismantle yours, they easily just unscrew, you'll be able to compare.

How can you get it out

You just unscrew it. You will need a pair of pliers and unscrew anti clockwise.

can you adjust the length of this item with the grub screw on the side?

It could be adjusted but only to shorten it. The maximum length is needed to use in the basin. I found that my original chrome top fitted perfectly but the thread on the bottom was one ring less than my original brass fitting so the original bottom part wouldn’t screw on. As a result although it clicks and holds the water perfectly, you can wobble the fitting when the basin is empty because the fitting is now missing the the end stabilising part.
