First Steps in Music Theory: Grades 1-5: Grades 1 to 5

I studied music at school which was 35 years ago.... so I had forgotten nearly every thing I had learnt. This book is perfect as a refresher. Well presented and takes you through each stage at the right level of detail. Possibly not that helpful for a beginner, but really good as an aide memoire.

We were asked to buy the Eric Taylor Grades 1 & 2 theory book ("Theory in Practice") for our piano-learning children. We thought we would be smart (and save some money) by buying this book to cover up to grade 5. It is not, however, a compendium edition of the 5 "Theory in Practice" books. It is instead a 'pocket summary' of the things to be learned at each grade, but it does NOT have the exercises and tests that the individual Eric Taylor books have. So we have actually now order the individual books as well as this one! That said, this is a really good, concise (and smaller format) summary - ideal for doing some cribbing on the school bus!

I personally think every musician in learning needs this. It’s an amazing little go to book for all your musical theory needs. Presented in easy to read and understand chapters with important crucial need to know facts highlighted.

Buy this book it is compact and concise. Supports teacher and adult in prep for exams. Now I have to buy another lol. Highly recommended!

You never check the dimensions of a book when you buy it (the picture shows it as an A4 size book!) and you assume that it is in A4 size unless it is clearly stated in the title (as it should) that it is a mini-sized edition!! The first page of this book claims that there would be supposedly a need for such a mini booklet. Well, if it is the case, why not offer this book in two sizes: this unbearable mini size booklet and a normal size A4 version and we will see whose version sells the most. As a result, this mini-sized booklet whose content seems interesting is COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. It is impossible to keep it open (even hard to open it due to its small size!) and you have to really read very closely this tiny booklet to be able to figure out what is written on it!! An awful experience!! ABRSM should be ashamed of selling such a mini-sized booklet without clearly indicating in the title the mention "mini size", as currently it is completely deceiving not to mention its mini size in the title.

I have lots of tother books on this subject - some by the same author- but this little book is handy to slip pin the pocket on long journeys and I found it actually easier to understand than the larger volumes. Well explained, well laid out. Hopefully it will help me to get through Grade 5 !

E' scritto bene, con diversi esempi pratici e va seguito insieme agli altri libri di teoria editi dalla stessa ABRSM e scritti dallo stesso autore.
