Absolutely hilarious with great characters, an amazing amount of movement in the illustrations too when there is action
Absolutely hilarious with great characters, an amazing amount of movement in the illustrations too when there is action.Best to start with the first one, Out From Boneville, to really get the most out of this one, the third. Skip the 2nd one, the Cow Race, as it is a let-down and adds very little to the ongoing plot. By the 3rd one, it is clear that this is one of the truly great graphic novels, and with loads of laughs too, which you can hardly say about other brilliant graphic novels like Maus, Jimmy Corrigan, The Sandman series, Fun Home, Watchmen or Batman - The Dark Knight.

Eternal...
Genius, absolute genius...but the wise reader will be sure to read the original black-and-white version, because some of the text has been changed in this colorized version.

Absolutely spot on. A huge Thumbs Up!
Bone has a very old soul. Its familiar tale harkens back to medieval and even Greek myth. Personally it reminds me of Peanuts whose comic characters are the perfect vehicle for imparting a great deal of wisdom about our own lives.Despite the humorous aspects of this story it now takes a turn into darker territory. Smith does a profound job of creating a looming, brooding darkness that builds at the corner of your mind and makes us fear for our beloved new world. Secrets are revealed and events are set in motion on a larger scale than just our heroes alone. Contrasting this dramatic narrative with almost Laurel and Hardy type gags is a superb choice that works wonderfully. The art is terrific and really shows off what simplicity can do. White on black night scenes which are flipped when lightning flashes are incredibly atmospheric. He also tackles a tricky extended rain scene with aplomb.Absolutely spot on. A huge Thumbs Up!

Get your kids to replace their digital universe with the Bone universe
I bought this used on the cheap because this particular installment was checked out from our local library and I could not wait in line for it to be returned. Great series for kids in the upper elementary and Jr. High range...but, really, I purchased it for myself, shhh, don't tell. The story line is just too well done, the characters fleshed out so nicely, and the humor is enjoyable. All this gives the entire Bone universe such a warm, exciting feel. I ended up purchasing the library binding of the entire set because after reading them all, I concluded our family can get so much out of multiple readings. My son is five and loves to have me explain the pictures to him. We are going to try play acting bits of the story together. A great alternative to electronic media, these books will wake up your kid's mind and revive your own stagnating adult imagination. What better way to transition children from hyper visual electronics to reading than combining the action-packed artwork of Jeff Smith with his epic writing. It's Lord of the Rings for kiddies.
