You will get 2 socks. Assuming you have a 2 wheel drive vehicle, you just need to put these on the two tires that are powered by the engine. You don't really need socks for the non-powered wheels.

Q: How is the wear when it needs to run on normal highway (at reduced speed) in between patches of snow covered area? Particularly when braking...

I have driven slow and easy on intermittent ice and snow, but only for short stretches no more than a mile. The roads were wet still from melt. The wear was not bad. But I would not exceed 30mph and take it easy on the breaking. I would not recommend long stretches on dry road.
