Nakoma Rit Liquid Dye,Black 8 oz

First time I've used a Rit Dye and it was brilliant! I usually use the other famous dye, but couldn't get the colour I needed, so decided to try Rit. I wanted a soft Peachy Pink, so mixed some Coral with some Petal Pink and it worked out fine. Not quite as "soft" a shade as I wanted but deffo the right colour. First time using so I'll probably guage the quantities better next time. I used the one for cotton and was dying an 80% Cotton 20% Polyester fabric and it worked perfectly.

10/10 This stuff is absolutely amazing 💯 % I've always had doubts about dyes but can honestly say this does what it says on the bottle. I had some liquid to clean the patio and it splashed onto my pants stripping the colour like bleach would do...this stuff had my pants back to as good as new...don't hesitate just buy it !

I tried this black liquid dye, and it’s okay but not perfect. The color comes out dark, but it wasn’t as even as I hoped, and it can be a bit tricky to apply smoothly. For the price, it’s fine if you’re just experimenting or doing small projects, but I wouldn’t rely on it for professional-level results.

It should be 5 stars. It works. My shoes look amazing. The reason I'm not giving five is because there is only one asterisk on the bottom of one of the images that says it won't work on polyester. So maybe thats my fault but honestly I read all the paragraphs below because thats where I assume I'll find all the information I need. So the nylon top layer of my dress is very green. And the pink polyester lining is still very pink. So it's brilliant... just check your fabric and mind the sneaky asterisk in one of the images I didn't see until afterwards.

I purchased this to put the colour back into one in my daughter’s green hoodies from TopShop. It didn’t work. The instructions for the dye are indecipherable and seem to be made for US washing machines. I found a YouTube video that RIT had sponsored which was also fairly useless and just skipped key steps. If you have a stand-alone machine you may achieve better results. However, having a built-under washing machine makes it virtually impossible to pour in almost two litres of boiling water (4 cups water and salt/ four cups of water and dye) without scalding yourself or covering your cupboard doors/ worktop/ washing machine/ floor with dye (in my case fluorescent green). You need to get this water into the top feed tray before the washing machine finishes the flushing of the powder/ liquid. Also once you’re past 40 years old there’s no chance of you reading the instructions on the bottle which may as well have been printed on microfiche. Basically it has ruined my daughter’s hoodie top (which was a faded lime green to start with). The dye is patchy with dark green areas - a total mess and I subsequently had to purchase a new jogging top to replace it. However, please also note that RIT would like you to purchase a dye fixer (another £10). That’s £20 in total, making it fairly uneconomical considering a replacement hoodie is £35 delivered. And wait for it, some garments may need more than one bottle of dye... bargain! My advice would be to save your money and either tie dye when it’s at the end of its life or just buy new.

I used 2 bottles in an 8kg front loader washing machine. I dyed a pale blue king size quilt cover and 2 shirts, one a fade blue and the other a faded green. All are 100% cotton. I used the navy dye with probably more salt than necessary. I put the dye and the salt solution directly into the bottom of the machine to save cleaning the drawer afterwards. I used the longest hottest wash as recommended - 3.5 hours at 60 degrees. All the items have come out a uniform, pleasing colour. The quilt cover and one shirt have come out a good shade of navy and the green one a very dark teal. I followed the instructions for cleaning the machine but only used about half the recommended amount of bleach, (they recommend almost a pint which made me a bit nervous). The old towels I used came out without any marks on so hopefully the washing machine is clean. I haven’t yet washed or used the dyed items but I am very pleased with the initial results.

I bought it to experiment with dyeing process. Took an old jeans (almost white in color) followed the instructions on the bottle and the results are satisfactory. It gave a dark navy blue colour to the pants. Got a very intense Color as I had used the whole bottle. Fabric although hardens (becomes stiffer) after dyeing.

The colour is very pretty. I have used it to dye some white bedding I never use and it looks store bought. From experience, whatever the directions say about the weight of the fabric be how much you will need please get the right amount of dye the first time!! The dye does get used up almost like it’s a physical thing in the water and as the fabric gets stirred through the water, the fabric catches the dye particles and keep them on the fabric. So even if the water still looks vibrant or dark with dye, the particles of actual dye that can stick to fabric might be mostly used up already. For example you want to dye 3 white towels and you dye them consecutively, the first one will very vibrant and take the colour on quickly. The second one will be medium and take longer to find useless colour particles. And the third one will be a pastel shade even if you soak it overnight, it can only grab the particles that are actually left in the water. If you dyed 3 towels simultaneously and swished them around and let them soak (actually swishing makes them catch the colour better) they will colour equally but the shade will be medium to light for all three if you don’t use the recommended amount of dye for the weight of fabric you’re using. I enjoyed having the multiple shades as it gives my bedding more dimension. But if you want uniformity for a set of bedding or a set of towels, you needs lots of dye and you have to dye them simultaneously to get a match. For this particular project, I used coral for natural fabrics like cotton, on cotton, and I used it in the washing machine itself on hot water, delicates cycle (so it both swishes and soaks for long periods) and on super wash so it goes for longer and gets an extra rinse. And the colour came out even and vibrant. I filled the washer (top loader) first and poured all the dye in and filled the bottle up with water a few times and dumped that in too, and once the washer was full and the dye was uniformly through all the water I swiftly add the sheets quickly but carefully adding a foot of fabric at a time so it was able to get fully saturated on its way in (a crumpled divert cover has lots of pockets of space colour might not reach if stuffed in as a ball). Then I used a bottle to push the fabric under water asap so it would collect the colour more evenly. After this you will need to run it through a wash cycle again as it will bleed a bit if you don’t. I personally wanted it to bleed and rewashwd it with another white sheet, and the sheet came out very light coral as it picked up some of the colour as it came off the original project. Using the washing machine method, you will want to run an empty cycle with bleach in it. I didn’t. I washed my whites after this to clean the washer for the next person and all my towels were very light pink. So your washer will keep a bit of colour in it after this process so wash similar colours right afterwards or run an empty load with bleach in it. Good luck. The brand quality is impressive.
