Easy to learn, fun to play, endless possibilities
I have never before played drums of any kind, so took a bit of a risk with this investment, and am super stoked that I did. I own a Roland synthesizer (Jupiter-X) and a Roland drum machine (TR-08), and I find the SPD-SX to be the easiest to learn and play. For the record, I have no interest in recording music, and bought this literally for the joy of playing some type of music at home after a long day of work. Within a few days of owning it, I was already creating kits to play with AI-generated drumless backing tracks. I would highly recommend buying a good quality set of speakers that hook up to this that also play music through Bluetooth, as you can play a backing track from your phone or computer and the sampling pad through the same set of speakers. I would also really recommend layering vinyl scratches (1229-Vinyl noise 1) over looped tracks to give it a truly vintage sound. I highly recommend this for the pure love of creating sound.

Need more percussion sounds/E-Drum system without taking more "real estate"?
The request for MORE sounds without taking more of the stage is more and more in demand. So I "cheat". I use the SPD-SX PRO mounted to a small Gilbratar tube rack that powers my ENTIRE hybrid kit. The 9 triggers are programmed for bongos, congas, finger snap, hand claps, timbales, etc., and I use its external inputs for a E-snare, E-Kick, 3-Toms, 1 Roland BT-Rim, E-cowbell. That is ALL 8 of the SPD-SX Pro's external triggers using Roland splitters (a must). I never been a fan of E-cymbals, so I use REAL Zildjian/Sabian cymbals mounted to the rack and use a regular hit-hat. From the SPD-SX PRO, I have FOUR outputs that go a Yamaha MINI MG-06 channel mixer. That way, I can QUICKLY adjust the Kick, Snare, Toms and sample pad sounds. Quick access to sound levels is important for a live/gigging drummer. From the Yamaha mixer, a single XLR line goes to my powered EV 3-way 2000W PA speaker. This is positioned just to my side (usually by the bass guitar's speaker) so the drum sounds "come" from my kit. If I need more power, I can run it to my 15" powered Yamaha SUB (that handles all the "lows" below 100 Hz) taking to lower load stress off of the 3-way powered PA. And yes, if I have to run to the venue's main sound board, I can do that too. So I have options! I have a multitude of sounds and this all actually take LESS space than a normal 5-piece acoustic kit. And the sounds? Studio snare ("fat", Brass, and piccolo), 24" Kick and maple toms sound "perfect". Percussion sound choices! Take a look at my setup and make the SPD-SX Pro power all of this!

Buy A new one
Don't buy this as a used item, the one I received was used and had a 300 dollar discount. Had some electrical issues that rendered it unusable. Buy a new one and you will be a happy camper.

Pro device
This thing is really fun. Roland put some good presets on the unit to showcase what can be done with it. Much more user friendly than the Alesis Strike multipad. I recommend buying some cheap foot triggers too. Good supplement to my electronic drum set.
