How much extra space to the left of an existing double socket is required in order to fit this please?

About half the width of the original double socket, maybe slightly more.

Is the integral 13amp fuse user changeable?

There is no integral fuse on the 3 socket outlet version, you use the fuse in the individual plug tops for that. There is however a replaceable fuse on the front in the 4 socket outlet version, I have both varieties.

Does a three gang converter need a new back box

No, it screws straight onto the existing box. Part of the new box just overlaps the wall. Has worked fine for us.

what is the combined output? Are the three sockets limited to a total of 13 amps split between them?

As it plugs into a single socket the output is relative to the socket it is plugged into so if it is a 13 amp socket then that is the amount of wattage you may plug in.
