Very useful for general knowledge and 11+ support
I bought this book and found it very helpful. It provides good general knowledge and also supports 11+ verbal preparation. The content is clear, easy to understand, and well presented. It is a useful resource for learning and building confidence. Overall, a very good book to support 11+ studies.

Great book for developing English literacy skills
This is very detailed and covers a range of topics in English it is quite advanced for our 8 year old , I expect she could be refering to this when she is 9 or 10, The lists are really comprehensive for eg similes alone there are about 80 to go through - as busy as a bee, as sly as a fox etc

Good for 11+ exam prep
This was recommended to me by an 11+ tutor and they have used it successfully for many years. It is a bit of a strange book but it has so much information in it which is so relevant to the 11+ exams. A large portion, especially in Buckinghamshire, since 2018 focuses on English and vocabulary so this book is very useful in preparation for anyone taking the 11+. Itโs interesting for children as it contains a huge amount of pictures so itโs not a textbook, at least doesnโt feel like one. I wouldnโt recommend buying this book and simply giving it to your child to work through. It requires you to engage with your child and guide them through the exercises and information.

A trip down memory lane with a fantastic book
I was really looking for the old book which I remember from my childhood. A small, blue book with no illustrations. However, old copies of this were extortionately priced and secondhand. I reluctantly decided to buy this illustrated version and am so glad I did. It has everything in it that my old copy had and I'm really enjoying looking through it and learning again - I particularly enjoy looking at the derivations of words and trying to memorise them. This is a great book and would be brilliant for teaching students learning english but I'm just enjoying doing the tests at the back!

Appreciated
Both books were appreciated by my 12 year old grandson, and his mother, as an up to date version of a trusted reference book. The answers were particularly welcome.

Bought for grandson, used by his Mum (a teacher) in her classes.
I remember this book from my schooling. The variety of information, the easily explained rules of grammar, and so much more. The new version has the same good sections and has been given a modern twist. Very useful for pupil and teacher alike.

Excellent.
This was bought for a 10 year old preparing for the 11 plus. Her mother and I both loved it but she was unimpressed.........Ah well, what 10 year old is going to be thrilled by a worthy book such as this. It is nevertheless, a most excellent resource.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE
Based on the introduction of words like "pant", "jean", "scissor", and nearly everyone, including journalists saying things like "thunk" for the past tense of think and sentences like, "There is 3 things", I shudder at the direction and destruction of the English language. My son is taught to say he is learning "language". It is no longer called "English". Of course I do not subscribe to that illogical decision and teach him to use his brain. Especially since there are millions of languages. First Aid in English is a must have for homeschoolers, parents/guardians & teachers (who actually care), also anyone learning English as another language. An EXCELLENT MUST-HAVE RESOURCE.
