Varjak Paw: An award-winning modern children's classic: 1

Varjak Paw is the best book ever. It is a great book to read. Adults will love it too. Varjak Paw is a black cat and he is a Mesopotamian blue. He has a big family. His best friends are Holly and Tam. He met them in the street. He also met a dog called Cludge. At the end of the story Cludge saves the day. There are two horrible cats called Sally Bones and Ginger. They both have their own gang.Varjak met Razoe. Razor is part of Sally Bones' gang. Razor wiped Varjak to the ground. Luckily, Varjak was ok. Every time Varjak went to sleep he dreamt of his ancestor Jalal. He taught Varjak the ways. One skill was impossible - it was shadow walking. My son read this book partially in school and asked me to put it on his kindle. I, of course, did and asked him why. He only said "Because I read this book in school and, so far it is interesting." The next day on the trip to Burger king I asked him if he liked the book so far. He said he finshed (My son is a fast reader) the book and loved it. I asked if I could borrow the kindle to read the book and my son replied yes. I read the book.Varjak Paw is a thriling, interesting and enjoyable read that I recommend for anyone age 9 and over. The suspenseful tale is a good 2-4 hour read that will engross you before you know it. I RECOMMEND.

I bought this as a gift for a (nearly) 7 yr old, so I've not seen it, but her parents say it is good

Varjak Paw is certainly one of those under-rated books that actually deserves more attention than it gets. The author has clearly planned the story well, and written it with a great style - I don't think another person could write it better than she has. She uses font sizes and positions to her advantage, to highlight certain words, such as "Slash". Don't imagine S.F. Said overusing them - she uses a good, even amount - not over using it, not under using it.The plot is interesting, even though it takes a little while to get into properly. I won't go through it on this review - I don't want to spoil it for anyone.HOWEVER, the reason this review did not get five stars, is because of the illustrations. Why S.F. Said got this individual to draw for her defies belief. This person clearly can not draw cats. Perhaps you could like the style of the illustrator, but I do not, and the vast majority of people who have read this book do not either. The cats lack shaping, and the only curves they have are their eyes. It looks like the drawer has only spent three minutes drawing each picture.If S.F. Said had got somebody different to draw for her eg. Wayne McLoughan, (illustrator of a series called Warriors) the drawings would, undoubtably, be more realistic and beautiful to look at and this review would probably get five stars. I think this is an amazing book and I have learnt new things and words at the same time this is a fun and enjoyable book the complete opposite of boring. When I am free instead of playing with my brother I read and at my bed time I read for 2 hours of this book. I would recommend this to ages 8-9 this is because of the understanding that has to be done. I am a 10 year old girl who read this in year 4 and I brought it again to read it another time. This is an amazing book and I would recommend it to even adults as this is an absolutely amazing and loveable book. But there was a bit too much violence so little kids should not read this. For example the characters Sally bones she has one eye and in the illustration as well in the book they started talking about the sockets and all that stuff so that's why but overall I love this book very much so do read this book.

I got the sequel to this first in a library sale and read it to my 5 year old daughter (who does kung fu and has a cat!) It was fantastic! So I ordered the first one off Amazon, and just finished reading it to her last night. She loved it too! As well as being a great story, well written, it touches on the while idea of some people thinking of themselves as 'purer' and more noble than other groups - as in Aryan Nazis and Jews. We are what we do, the story shows, not what group we're born into... Anyone can become Noble through kindness and bravery! The Zen-like wisdom was a great surprise for me too! And with Varjak's dream ancestor Jelal there's a nod to the great Persian master Rumi I suspect... :)

Good

It's actually a while since I bought this but I'm compelled to write a review. My son and I read it together when he was about 9 years old. It's the story of a young cat in an alienating world finding his way, making friends and learning to fight both for himself and for what is right. My son found it absolutely captivating, as did I. That was 3 years ago and we have struggled to find another book that has made such an impression and engaged him so much, despite many worthy reads. Would be a good read for 11 - 13 yrs alone, or 9 upwards with an adult, I think. The sequel is also good and worth investing in. It was only until we read The Graveyard Book this year that I felt we had found the same standard of wordcraft, magic and excitement.

Mon fils de 9 ans a adoré ce livre. Il a beaucoup aimé les personnages, qui sont bien développés, et le rythme de l'histoire. Il était triste quand nous l'avons terminé, de sorte que j'ai commandé le second livre de Varjak Paw. J'espère qu'il sera aussi bon que le premier!
