![The Simpsons - Season 5 [DVD] [1990]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31J+o+Pfc0L._AC_SL3840_.jpg)

Sixteen seasons (and counting) of pop culture-rocking brilliance, the first four of which have already been gloriously archived on DVD. But in the words of Krusty the Clown: "What has The Simpsons done for me lately?" Well, how about all 22 episodes of season 5, each accompanied by commentary, deleted scenes, and other encyclopedic extras that hopelessly devoted Simpsons fans crave, no, demand? Season 5 is perhaps not as classics-packed as the third or fourth seasons, but no self-respecting Simpsons fan should be without the episodes "Homer's Barbershop Quartet", featuring George Harrison, "Cape Feare", one of Sideshow Bob's (and guest voice Kelsey Grammer's) finest half-hours, "Rosebud", "Springfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)" and "Bart Gets Famous", with the Springfield-sweeping catchphrase "I didn't do it". Plus, the star power this season is impressive: Michelle Pfeiffer as Homer's comely, donut-loving co-worker in "The Last Temptation of Homer", Albert Brooks as a self-help guru who unleashes "Bart's Inner Child", Kathleen Turner as the creator of Malibu Stacy in "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy", and, as themselves, the Ramones ("Rosebud"), James Woods ("Homer and Apu"), Buzz Aldren ("Deep Space Homer"), and even Robert Goulet ("Springfield"). But it is the writers and the core ensemble cast who exhibit, to quote "Deep Space Homer", "the right... What's that stuff?" Series milestones include the first appearance of yokel Cletus in "Bart Gets an Elephant" and Maggie's infant nemesis, The Baby with One Eyebrow in "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Badasssss Song" which also happens to be The Simpsons ' 100th episode. Add in a very good "Treehouse of Horror" episode, (which outs Ned Flanders as the Devil and Marge as the head vampire), and one Emmy-nominated musical extravaganza ("Who Needs the Quick-E-Mart" from "Homer and Apu"), and you have a Simpsons season that's not just great, it's DVD-box-set great. --Donald Liebenson Box set containing all 25 episodes from Season 5 of the animated comedy series about the world's favourite dysfunctional family. Episodes are: 'Homer's Barbershop Quartet', 'Cape Feare', 'Homer Goes to College', 'Rosebud', 'Tree House of Horror (Part 4) - The Simpsons Hallowe'en Special IV', 'Marge on the Lam', 'Bart's Inner Child', 'Boy Scoutz N the Hood', 'The Last Temptation of Homer', 'Springfield (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalised Gambling)', 'Homer the Vigilante', 'Bart Gets Famous', 'Homer and Apu', 'Lisa vs Malibu Stacy', 'Deep Space Homer', 'Homer Loves Flanders', 'Bart Gets an Elephant', 'Burns' Heir', 'Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song', 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much', 'Lady Bouvier's Lover' and 'Secrets of a Successful Marriage'. Review: Springfield year five - The complete fifth season of the Simpsons is presented here in box set, spread across four dvds. One of those seasons that nobody tends to argue about the quality of. Episodes are as follows: Homer's Barbershop Quartet. Cape Feare. Homer Goes to College. Rosebud. Treehouse of Horror IV. Marge on the Lam. Bart's Inner Child. Boy Scoutz 'N The Hood. The Last Temptation of Homer. Springfield [or how I learned to stop worrying and love legalised gambling]. Homer the Vigilante. Bart gets Famous. Homer and Apu. Lisa Vs Malibu Stacy. Deep Space Homer. Homer loves Flanders. Bart gets an elephant. Burns' Heir. Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss song. The boy who knew too much. Lady Bouvier's lover. Secrets of a successful marriage. These episodes are eighteen years old now so the animation can look a bit basic and the voices can sound slightly different at times, but that doesn't take anything from the quality of the scripts. Each episode has direct scene access and a commentary. Some have the option to play them with deleted scenes reinstated. One episode on each disc has an animation showcase which shows you the various stages of the making of it. Languages and subtitles are as follows: Languages: English. Subtitles: English, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish. [All accessible via the language options menu for the individual episodes rather than any main one] One episode each disc has a special language feature which allows it to be heard in either Czech, Italian, Polish or Hungarian. On the extras on disc one there's a short introduction from show creator Matt Groening. Plus a handful of tv commercials involving Simpsons characters that can be watched all in a row or individually. Disc four gives you the chance to watch all the deleted scenes for the season [the ones that as mentioned can be added into the episodes] in one long twenty minute batch. These can be watched with or without a commentary. The fourth disc also has a short look back from one of the producers. To the time when this season was originally broadcast and the show was becoming a phenomenon. Each disc does remove some of the slight problems of earlier season dvds in that you can select play all to watch all the episodes on a disc in a row. And you just go straight into the titles of an episode when you select to play it, rather than having to get through a copuright message. An anti piracy ad and a subsequent logo screen at the start of each disc can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. So all in all it's a great collection for a great season of a great show. Review: A first rate box set - Having 3 other UK Simpsons Boxsets, I must say that this fifth season box set is definitely better. Maybe it is just me but it seems like more effort has been put into it, presentation wise. For instance the menu screen for each individual DVD are now more detailed and have animation which, whilst not being staggering, is quite amusing at least initially. The DVD's and case are much more colourful. I now this is not essential but it gives it more of a polish. Also there seem to be more extras. Most of the episodes now have deleted scenes which if you wish can be played as you watch the episode. A small pair of scissors appear in the bottom right and if you click play on the remote it will then play the deleted scene where it was intended in the episode. I like that. There are also the usual commentaries, interviews etc... The episodes themselves are amongst some of my favourite Simpsons episodes. Some of the highlights are: Cape Feare Barts Inner Child Deep Space Homer Lisa vs Malibu Stacy Homer the Vigilante There are many more excellent episodes to enjoy. Even though this is a fairly early season I would say that it stands up to and even surpasses many of the later seasons. Not that I am saying that The Simpsons is starting to tire. I still love it but it has fallen in standard a little recently. I would recommend this boxset to any fan and hope that the UK version is the same. I was recently sent an Asian boxset of Season 4 and whilst the content is the same as UK/USA the difference in quality is marked. Avoid anything other than the UK/USA versions.

Where the golden age waned just a hair.
The supposed 'golden age' of The Simpsons lasted from season two until, depending on who you ask, probably season eight. From that point on, the show stretched further and further away from what it was originally. That's a different story of course, but in truth, the tiniest cracks begin to show in the Simpson facade in the course of this fifth brilliant season, such as Bart getting an elephant or Homer being sent into space yet also having been part of a world-conquering barbershop quartet (this writer's favourite episode ever, despite its lack of realism). Aside from that minor gripe, this is without doubt one of the best seasons of the show. So many classic episodes and moments are contained within. 'Cape Feare,' the greatest Sideshow Bob episode of all, featuring the hilarious rake sequence that is now a comedy classic; 'Rosebud,' featuring Mr. Burns' hunt for his lost bear Bobo; a giant teen sex comedy parody as an oblivious Homer goes back to college ('hello, that sounded like a pig fainting...') and Marge's flirt with danger and lesbian undertones in 'Marge On The Lam'. There's also a parade of quality guest appearances; the always brilliant Kelsey Grammar continues to excel as Sideshow Bob, George Harrison makes a genuinely hilarious appearance ('well, what a nice fella.'), and the brilliant Albert Brooks is surpassed only by the late great Phil Hartman in their respective appearances. The hairline cracks may have started to show, but season five is still a strong contender for the Simpsons' greatest season.

The start of the Simpsons at their best!
To me, season five marks the first of the best half-dozen or so of the Simpsons 16 seasons. As so many reviewers have said so much & listed the series contents, I'll not add much other than to say if you're debating whether or not to buy this series, just do it as this is the best of the five series released to date! Time does not permit to tell of Sideshow Bob & the rakes sketches from Cape Feare: why they were included I don't know, but they're brilliant. Also Homer Simpson's fake "I'm really paying attention" glasses from The boy Who Knew Too Much, Montgomery Burns' condemnation of reporters in Rosebud, the BRILLIANT sendup of Howard Hughes in Springfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling) and the sheer brilliance of the sketches in the toy department from Lisa vs Malibu Stacey. Watch out for Homer trying to persuade Marge that the toy fort is safe for Maggie - magic! Will I be buying this series? Do I really need to answer that question? Just buy it... you won't regret it!

Classic Simpsons
A classic season for The Simpsons, although be aware that the deleted scenes are on the final disc as well as on the individual episodes (you don't have to watch the episode again with the small deleted scenes!), and that deleted scenes featured in the 138th spectacular aren't repeated on this set.

Woo-hoo! - one of the best Simpsons boxsets ever!
A huge amount of the very best Simpsons episodes ever recorded are in this Season Five boxset. One of my favourites is: The Last Temptation Of Homer, with effortlessly beautiful guest star Michelle Pfeiffer imortalised forever as the sultry Mindy. Homer The Vigilante has Sam Neill providing his best dulcet, decadent voice. Deep Space Homer has legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin gamely playing himself in a hilarious episode that sends up 2001 A Space Odyssey. All of these Season 5 episodes are gems to be treasured and rewatched by anyone who loves comedy and animation.

So good I bought it twice..by error!!!
One of the best ever of The Simpsons' now many series', so good I've bought it twice!! And therein lies my reason for returning this fantastic collection! I already had a copy in my packed DVD cabinet but somehow, I must have missed it. To be fair to Amazon, they were very forthcoming with the return process, which was simple, swift and straightforward. The collection itself is full of some of the all time best Simpsons episodes and has the usual extras of commentary, deleted scenes etc.

Do you like things that are funny?
Do you like things that are funny? Do you like to laugh and take trips down memory lane? If so, BUY THIS SEASON! Season 5 is quite possibly the best season of the Simpsons out there. There are so many classics on these discs with some of the most memorable lines in the entire series. Seriously... buy it. You really can't buy fun for any cheaper than this! Don't cheat yourself.
