The Art of Manipulating Fabric

Sure this book is in black and white but it is a rare find and has its own beauty in its monochrome as the pictures work on shade & light to feature the effect, which works. I’m bewitched, it’s a pouring of complete passion and library reference of techniques and the benefit of a lifetimes work catalogued in one place. I don’t know any other book as a ‘go-to’ guide for anyone wanting to learn various techniques from basic to advanced, and allow experimentation on the way in a book quite like this one. Step by step guides with pictures to bring fabric to life from start to end. It is definitely going to be well used in my workroom - well done Colette Wolff - a great book.

This book, although heavily text based and would benefit from more colour images, is really great. If you want to learn about quilting stitches and interesting surface texture this book is great. I'm a pattern cutter who bought this book, so as to understand how much fabric gets used up in decoration like this. I recently received couture unfolded for christmas and it is the poor man's version of this book.

I’ve bought this book as a gift. I have a copy of my own which is great for trying out a wide variety of fabric manipulations including smocking, controlled pleats, godets , with full instructions on how to do them. All photographs are in black and white which is fine because the fabrics used in all techniques are also white which makes the textures of the fabric very visible.

At last a book that aims to place the information sewers want as opposed to what others think they need. Clear, concise with excellent dialogue and diagrams to support. This text will help the basic sewer to lift their skills and look at fabric very differently. It marries very well with a Couture Sewing technique book I am currently working through Must go - book calling!

If you love fabric flowers, ruching, shirring, VV Rouleux ribbons, pleating etc and you like Molly Goddard's dresses and Boho outfits, then you need to buy this book. I learnt more from 10 minutes reading this in a café than I have on some sewing courses. You can translate every technique in here onto any project, try it on quilts, bags, curtains, you name it. This book is a bible of knowledge and demystifies what looks complex in couture, to very simple samples, that will give your projects the WOW factor. No need to buy textured, expensive dress fabrics, you CAN do it yourself.

This book is great. It's an encyclopedia of fabric manipulation and smocking. I am docking a star though as I though the book would have been more beneficial if the photos were done in colour. It would have sharpened the fabric effects alot more giving the reader a better idea of how the effects would look. There is a step by step guide as well for you to be able to try these fabric manipulations out.

I couldn't put the book down when it first arrived! Lots of knowledge, useful diagrams and photos showing techniques. Will be an invaluable source when I start sewing some of my ideas and making them reality!

My copy is already getting a bit dog eared from use - always a good sign in a reference book! This work takes what you already knew - or thought you knew - about using fabric, and takes it further. From the simplest (eg how long does a ruffle need to be to give the effect you want?), to using godets and other inserts, to three dimensional objects ... if you want to design your own costumes or clothes, or to use fabric as decoration, or to understand how to manipulate fabric to make quilts, hangings, cushions, etc, etc, this is an essential reference book. If you want a set of recipes for projects, look elsewhere!

Such a great book if you love working with fabric in creative ways! It’s packed with techniques like pleating, gathering, smocking, and more. The explanations are clear, and there are tons of samples and diagrams. Perfect for fashion students, designers, or anyone who loves fabric play!

This really is a book about how to perform miracles with fabric! I disagree with Gingercook that this is not a book for novices or beginning seamstresses. I am just learning to use my Viking Topaz 30, taking lessons at the best sewing shop in Las Vegas, but I LOVE this book and, as others have said, cannot put it down! I have found ANSWERS to every question you could possibly have concerning getting fabric to do what you want it to do. I want to make a ruffle skirt for my 4 year old grand-daughter, but I want to make one with ruffles that stand out and "float" - not just hang there. Maybe other people know about Circular Flounce and cutting the ruffle pieces (as it shows on page 67) from a CIRCLE OF FABRIC - the strip closest to the center of the circle has tremendous flare, the next strip not so much and the third strip (which is cut farthest from the center of the circle has very little flare. The diagrams in this book are the best I have ever seen and they are on every page, helping you to understand, totally, how to do each step. It explains GRAINLINE BALANCE ON PAGE 70, with diagrams. Sorry but I had never heard of grainline balance, but I will never forget it now! I had never heard of a GODET, now I can't wait to try to make one and the SQUARE GODET shown on page 84 is one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Just take a large hankerchief (or large square of fabric) hold it by one of the 4 corners and let the fabric drape by itself. The drawing on page 84 shows this with 4 folds ending in a handkerchief edge. I can't wait to try to make one. I am taking this book to my instructors so they can teach me how to make a godet (go-day). I have never seen so many different drapery pleats. I especially like the CARTRIDGE PLEAT. Colette not only shows you all the different pleats, but she also shows you how to change them and make them look completely different. This book is an INSPIRATION, but it is not a book about which fabric to choose to make the miracles happen. It is about being able to make these miracles happen with ALL KINDS OF FABRIC. I'm taking classes in Heirloom sewing and this book shows how to do many of the Heirloom techniques and shows it with diagrams, making it easy to understand how to do all those intricate, gorgeous Shark's Teeth, Slashed Tucks, Keyhole Tucks, etc. The book also includes a chapter on Quilting and one on Stuffed Quilting & Applique, teaching you things that almost make you drool - because they are pieces of art and belong in a museum. I purchased this book on a whim while I was deciding whether or not to purchase the Colette Sewing Handbook by Sarai Mitnick and I ended up buying both of them. EVERY PERSON WHO SEWS OR WHO IS THINKING OF SEWING SHOULD OWN THIS BOOK. It is an inspirational book and a book of HOW TO PERFORM MIRACLES with fabric!

Ich war erst skeptisch und wusste nicht ob ich es mir holen soll oder nicht. Aber (!) hätte ich gewusst, wie toll es ist, dann hätte ich es schon viel früher geholt. Das ist ein dickes Buch mit lauter neuen Techniken, auf jeder Seite sind mehrere Techniken gut erklärt. Dieses Buch würde ich jedoch schon erfahreneren Schneidern empfehlen, weil manche Techniken es in sich haben. Aber an sich sind die Techniken so gut erklärt, dass jedermann sie schaffen sollte. Ein wirklich wirklich gutes Buch!
