It does when you use the USB adapter but can be turned off in windows settings. It doesn't have monitoring if you plug the 3.5mm connectors straight into the PC.

can this be used as a conventional headset for skype without the usb attachment?

Yes this headset works completely fine without the included USB dongle.The dongle is primarily for the 7.1 software effect.The G230 version of this headset doesn't come with the USB dongle and is cheaper. You could consider getting that if you like the color red. :)

How's the noise cancelling? Can other people hear what's coming through headphones when volume is loud?

yea people will be able to hear what's coming through ur headphones when the volume is at max, on both headphone and laptop at the same time. That happens with every type of headphones tho. for me its not much of a problem If anyone is able to hear, but i guess its personal preference.
