Lingerie Design: A Complete Course

Serious design including boned foundation/ support garments and also beautiful embellishments, everything you would ever want to know about lingerie construction is included. Other books don't even come close to the depth of this book which not only includes patterns, but pattern drafting. This author not only knows her stuff, she is gifted at conveying it in easy to understand descriptions and drawings and the book itself is as beautiful as the lingerie; a real pleasure to peruse as well as a serious guide for the seamstress wishing to tackle this venue. I could not recommend this book more highly.

So far I have drafted the top for stretch wear and have achieved a fairly good pattern result. great diagrams and insight for patternmaking and design for lingerie. Not many books out there so we relish those we can get. I have turned to it a lot since I received it last year. If you want to design and sew your own or for others this is a great book to gain knowledge and move into real design.

This comprehensive book is a must for anyone interested in making their own lingerie.

This book is fun & informative but if you did not go to design school you will be lost. And some of the former fashion photos are outdated, could should just basic designs but money spent.

I was able to make this outfit using the patterns from this book BUT I have been sewing for 20+ years and I did improvise using techniques I already knew coupled with this book. Let's start with the cons: As a pattern book, this book is not for the faint of heart. If you are a visual learner the diagrams are going to frustrate you because they are inconsistent. The math for drafting a bra cup is ALL wrong. It took me several tries, following the directions to the letter and not once did the cup fit the band. Which is not great when you dont have a mannequin or person to drape a bra cup onto (which is more than likely the reason why most would buy a pattern making book). Eventually I just winged the cup using basic math and geometry. Everything else worked fine but I feel like with bras being an integral part of lingerie that should be something perfected in a pattern book. Also a single dart cup is not included for initial drafting which is odd to me. I would not reccomend this book if you are a novice at pattern making. Pros As a technical sewing book it's great. This book is in fact a course. Giving details about the various components of lingerie from bras to panties, how to calculate stretch, and the various design options for each segment. It also gives instruction on construction techniques that will help you IMPROVE your skills. I wouldn't say it's a bad book but its definitely not for someone who isnt advanced in sewing. It's not perfect but a good addition.

I had gotten this book from my local library and it was mind blowing! I've been sewing for many years and have a lot of experience. But lingerie and undergarments are an area that I've struggled to learn, until I came across this book. I highly recommend it!

This is the third lingerie design book I have purchased and Ms. Powell has covered each area thoroughly. The softcover (not paperback) and oversize is in keeping with the subject matter. I have not yet made any lingerie pattern from scratch but of the three books I have purchased this would be my choice to draft patterns.

Amazing book! There is nothing like it out there for lingerie design. It has step by step instructions for flat pattern making, in addition to inspirational photos.
