John O'Donohue is the pre-eminent modern poet of Irish spirituality. He intertwines and merges the spirituality of the Celtic cultures over the past 1,000+ years since they became Catholic. He includes the pre-Christian cultural cosmology as well. He acknowledges the Catholic Church's expertise at bringing the Christian message of Good News to people by including and transforming many of their cultural symbols to help people understand more deeply what Jesus Christ offers them. O'Donohue weaves the Celtic worldviews and adds his own educated poetic understanding of the ancient peoples to provide the modern world with a comprehensive and profound respect for the people, planet and cosmos as Celts have related to them.Additionally, O'Donohue has produced a four (4) CD set of his poetic Blessings spoken by his own soothing tongue that is available (separate from this DVD).O'Donohue in university, eventually receiving his PhD, read in Philosophy, Theology and English (have you noticed that for several hundred years the Irish, who were forced to learn English by their occupiers, have produced the greatest English-language works of art). This man is more than fascinating. And this DVD is a fine entry point to his works.

No druids here - just a keen insight in the human mind seen through Celtic glasses.
Celtic Spirituality can many things to different people. The late John O'Donohue was a Catholic priest, theologian, philosopher and poet. His insight into the human psyche is profound and life altering. From my first experience from reading Anam Cara through the viewing of this video, O'Donohue takes in a beautiful, optimistic journey of the human soul. His teachings are not overtly Catholic and can be enjoyed by non-Catholic and those who question the existence of a Trinitarian God. As a Catholic, however, this books breathes life into my understanding of God and how he set us up to live in an earth filled with beauty and wonder but still creates the sense of longing the drives us to seek him to know life eternal. I strongly recommend viewing the video through completely the first time and then take subsequent trips through the video again but to stop at the end of each section to ponder, consider and reflect on his teachings. The next step will be to read the great work Anam Cara

Disappointing
First, theologically, I love O'Donohue as a writer and poet, and some of his interviews I have heard [excellent one with Krista Tippett show On Being] are very inspiring. I buy into his ideas of immediacy and mystical Christianity. I had really high hopes and expectations for this as one familiar with his themes and these settings. It IS very beautiful, and he IS there and he DOES speak...but maybe it's the editing, film pacing, or his death interfered with the production- not a lot of depth into the power of his thinking. it just left me a little flat. May be a good intro for those unfamiliar with his writing. You will get a wee sense of him- a beautiful man sorely missed.

Journey of the Heart
I enjoyed this DVD from beginning to end. I was familiar with John O'Donohue, so had heard him speak similarly to how he did on the DVD. In his case, more is more! It was wonderful to see him amid that familiar landscape of the wild Atlantic and to the kitchen where his beloved mother Josie and he, shared a cup of tea and a laugh. It is still hard to believe that he is dead, and that indeed his mother is also buried beside him. However, this DVD adds to the sense of the imortal within each of us. It raised my heart and is a wonderfully reflective tool for anyone, open to the Spirit.

The Very Best!!!!!!!!!
Oh, you will not only enjoy "A Celtic Pilgrimage" but you will be inspired by it! It is visually beautiful but you feel a deeper connection to the world around you after watching it, a feeling of peace, and a deeper understanding about life and death I wish John O'Donohue was alive because this pilgrimage would go on my bucket list!!!! Sadly for us he has passed but he guides you on this pilgrimage any time you want or need to go with this beautiful and inspiring DVD. I am so very happy to have added this to my collection.

Take this journey!
This man was a truly exceptional and learned spiritual thinker, writer and teacher as well as philosopher. I'm sure he had many titles. We are just lucky to have all the material he left behind. Here you get to go with him to where he grew up and discover what it taught him. Besides this his audio collection "Beauty and the Invisible Embrace" is a treasure. He talks a lot about what the human spirit needs that gets overlooked in our modern world where much is gained but much may be lost.

Felt I was in Ireland again speaking to John
I can't say enough good about this DVD. This DVD is well edited and shows John taking us on a pilgrimage to different beautiful places in Ireland, but it is so much more than that. John speaks about how we are connected to the land and sense of place spiritually. One of the greatest minds of the 20th century is humble and his kind voice and heart come through the DVD and it seems as if he is speaking to us, personally. Introduction by Will Farrel, his friend.

One of Ireland's finest minds
This unique video documents John O'Donohue in some of the loveliest places in western Ireland. It clearly demonstrates the breadth of his philosophy and ideas, particularly in relation to ancient Celtic Culture, but also with strong overtones of Christianity. However, this video is not really about orthodox Catholicism. It is about the relationship of people to the land and uses nature extensively as a metaphor for human affairs. As such it is one of the finest examples of geopoetics that I have encountered. John O'Donohue was essentially a man of the people and was an ordained Catholic priest for 19 years before he left the public priestly ministry to devote his time to writing. His untimely death in 2008 at the age of 52 shocked all those who loved his works. He was the author of numerous books on Celtic Wisdom as well as several volumes of poetry. He gained a PhD in Germany on Hegel and it is his deep knowledge of philosophy that he brought to bear on all his work. This is a very moving video and I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in geopoetics. O'Donohue's presence is captivating.

Sorely missed spiritual poet
Sorely missed mystic of the ancient earth. A bardic quality we only find in storytellers like Martin Shaw now. RIP
