Richard III is one of the great Shakespearean characters and roles. James R Siemon examines the attraction of this villain to audiences and focuses on how beguiling, even funny he can be, especially in the earlier parts of the play. Siemon also places King Richard III in its historical context; as Elizabeth I had no heirs the issue of succession was a very real one for Shakespeare's audience. The introduction is well-illustrated and provides a comprehensive account of the play, critical approaches to it and its varied stage history. The edition also provides a clear and authoritative playtext, edited to the most rigorous standards of scholarship, with detailed notes and commentary on the same page. With a wealth of helpful and incisive commentary the Arden Shakespeare is the finest edition of Shakespeare you can find, giving a deeper understanding and appreciation of his work. I love Shakespeare's history plays, and the discovery of Richard III's body sparked my interest. The copy is quality, contains plenty of footnotes (and a lengthy introduction) for a student or someone new to Shakespeare. The translation is good. I like the story even though I know some people that find it too far fetched in a few aspects. After all, this is a Shakespeare play...it's not made to be accurate or realistic. It's made to please the monarch and the monarch's censors. The only downside is that sometimes there are so many notes on a page that there's very little play text. It's similar to what happens with study KJV Bibles, or study copies of almost anything written in middle or early-modern English. So, excellent for a student or someone that likes those extra notes, but if you're adept when it comes to Shakespeare or are used to reading works in early-modern English, then it may be cumbersome for you. Personally, I liked all the notes because I'm out of college, and without them I'd have to google anything I needed some context on. They're also nice for lending to others. Great commentary by Professor Siemon. Wonderful way for a layman to better understand the Bard!

A great edition of Richard 3
This book has a very good translation of the popular Shakespeare play. It provides important footnotes in the text as well as a detailed, imformation packed introduction and appendixes.

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this book.
One of my favourite plays of Shakespeare's. Richard is such a heady blend of pitiful evil, loneliness and smart aleck meanness, that it makes the play a delight to read. Some of the most engaging and persuading speeches made by Richard, are captured here. He, who is "not shaped" for fun or sport, and "cannot prove a lover" because of his deformities is therefore, "determined to prove a villain and hate the idle pleasures of these days." Powerful, heart-pounding and tragic, "Richard III" is a tremendous saga of one man's self-destruction and the despair and devastation he causes those who cross his path.
