The unique advantage of bell sets is the fact that each note is created by an individual bell, and so the notes that are not used in a particular song can be removed and the student has a greater chance for success. A handbell orchestra acts as one instrument, with each musician responsible for their particular notes, sounding their assigned bells whenever those notes appear in the music. Give each participant one or two bells and ask them to join in a simple melody. Independently, whether the player has musical knowledge or not, the band will sound harmoniously with just a little bit of training. Most solfeggio teachers advise that it's better to begin not with a piano, but with a simpler and more accessible instrument. However, like other "serious" musical instruments, bells can help in 1) teaching note duration, 2) understanding different pitches, 3) recognizing different musical scales, and 4) the acquisition of a sense of rhythm and melody. If you are a beginner, playing by note can be difficult. It is easier to follow color-coded circles with note letters. Just by following the color circles, you will sound like an experienced musician. All songs were written with circles in the musical staff, and there are no stems or flags - only notes on the line - to keep it simple. This book was written with beginners in mind. The color of the bells or resonator blocks must be the same as the color of the bells below. C (Do) - red, D (Re) - orange, E (Mi) - yellow, F (Fa) - green, G (Sol) - light blue, A (La) - blue, B (Ti) - violet, C8 (Do) - white CONTENTS A Hunting We Will Go A Sailor Went to Sea Acka Backa Amazing Grace Alphabet Song Are You Sleeping? Almost Perfect
Almost perfect in that the colored circles are shown on a musical staff in their appropriate place. I like this better than other books that just have the colored circles over words. I believe it helps make a connection to where notes fall on a staff and gives the added visual of low and high notes. But like other books, the duration of each note is a guessing game unless you are familiar with the song. Every song cannot entirely be made up of quarter notes. It seems there could be SOME system of showing note value that wouldn't have to involve note heads and stems. Since there are several songs I do not know, there is no way for me to help students play those songs right unless I first look them up elsewhere, and teach it to the students first. I WILL use this book with my youngest students, but only when they already know the song well. In fact, it may be preferable for the youngest kids. I have not tried it yet. If you wish for a book that shows the colored notes on the musical staff (treble clef) with correct note values, purchase "Play Hand Bells, 55 Easy songs for 8 note Bell Set" by Lena Eckhoff instead!

To many two page song that you have to turn the page.
This book would have been great except that there are toooo many two page songs that you have to turn the page. The two page songs should have been left and right of each other so you didn't have to turn a page. ( there were 12 songs that you have turn the page).

Printing error, but would have been great otherwise
Overall, seems like it would be a good music book. Unfortunately, it was printed incorrectly. 1) the pages were upside down and 2) the edges of the print and musical notes were cutoff. These errors made it impossible to play a lot of the songs. I hope the seller realizes these printing issues may be occurring. I gave it a 2 star review since this could be a print on demand book and not a problem the seller has been made aware of.
