How do you keep the brackets from falling off the blind head?

Tighten the center screw for a more snug fit. You can also remove the black plastic washer for a tighter fit.

I have verticals on the window I am using these on. I am not able to slide the blinds open past the center bracket.

What is the distance from the edge of a blind head rail to the end of the rod holder?

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question. These are strong heavy duty brackets and I would recommend them if they fit for you. I bought them to try and use in a little bit different manner than they where designed for and my bright idea didn't really work out for me. I did not return them because I may find a use for them somewhere else down the road.
