Go for Beginners

A good beginners book. I recommend it.

Great introduction to the game. Simple instructions, sample set ups and easy to understand examples.

This was a good book to begin to get a handle on playing the game. It encourages thinking about strategy first, but it does include samples of play which are easy to understand. The book is a little bit above the patience level of a ten year old, but easily read. So if you're giving this to a child, make sure you plan to spend some time reading and discussing.

Excellent "Go for Dummies" book. Good illustrations and descriptions.

Picked this up with a board to teach the kids the game. Perfect for the job.

Simply put, several pages into the meat of the book and I said "This is completely useless to me at this stage!", and I picked up and began learning the game from Cho Chikun's "GO, A COMPLETE INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME", also sold by amazon. Later, when I understand the game, I'll come back to this "beginner's" book for some hints on strategy. But for now, I am thankful to the other reviewer who also held back on giving this book more stars than it deserved, and was the reason two books came with that first GO set. Please reviewers, be honest. This is NOT for someone who has never played GO. The author makes a stab in that direction, but sadly misses. I realize I didn't completely waste my money buying this, but I could have held onto a bit longer had the author been more honest about the level of the book. Buy this later as an intermediate... along with some strong coffee. Having knowledge is a wonderful thing, and undoubtedly the author is a brilliant player. Having the ability to communicate that knowledge in a useful manner is another. Coffee. Lots of it. And not the de-caf.

With somethings, like old games that are still played, you don't need the "newest" book out there. In fact, I think this is probably the best "beginner" book in existence (at least for English speaking audiences). Simple, clear, and very helpful. Read this first if you are thinking of picking up the game of Go.
