Toys for Work
This Gimble is so simple to use when linked to the Matterport software. Two minutes to set up, less than one minute to scan a room.

Complete 360° photo studio
The Matterport Axis and Tripod set is a compact and complete 360° photo studio system that is capable of taking some amazing 3D images of your surroundings. Set-up is simple, and the included instructions are, thankfully, short and clear. Firstly, charge the base unit using the supplied USB C cable, Once charged attach the phone holder to the motorised base, then mount your smartphone to the holder making sure the phone camera is aligned to the centre of the base. Download the Matterport "Capture" app on your phone and follow the on-screen instructions to pair the phone to both the Axis and the included remote. Once everything is set up and in place tighten all the knobs and attach the gimbal to the tripod, making sure to adjust it to the required height. Then either using the remote or the phone you can start the 360° capture of your surroundings. The motorised mount rotates in small increments to take an image of your surroundings, including the floor and ceiling. Immediately after the capture you can see a 3D view of the environment and adjust the image further if any spots are missed. The image can be viewed on the app or through the Matterport website once you create an account. The Axis comes very well packed in its own hard case that fits everything snugly inside, the included remote conveniently clips to the side of the phone holder magnetically, and the motorised mount has LEDs at the front that lets you know the charge level. Overall the Axis is very well built and looks like a premium product. The tripod comes separately in its own box and works well with the Axis. Like most tripods, its height-adjustable and can be retracted and folded away making it extremely compact. The build quality is average, the legs are thin and it's extremely lightweight, which isn't surprising as it's made to be carried around. The only issue I've had is with the phone holder, which needs to be unscrewed to fit your phone rather than having a springy clip, which is a bit of an inconvenience, and it also doesn't rotate to support landscape mode which is a bit of a shame. but otherwise, the product performs well and I've been able to capture some great shots. I give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Excellent Stabilizing Gimbal for 3D 360 photo scans
I have been impressed with the way this Matterport Axis gimbal stabilizer for smartphone camera captures 3D images. It’s very easy simple to setup the gimbal stabilizer with the tripod. This Matterport Axis gimbal stabilizer comes in a decent zipped case, which keeps it nicely protected during travel or storage. The gimbal has an internal lithium battery so after unpacking I put the gimbal stabilizer on charge. Good to see there is a USB C type port on the side for charging, a USB C to USB C charging cable is supplied for this purpose although you can still use a USB A to USB C for charging also. Following charging I slipped the gimbal onto the motorized rotating mount, the mobile phone camera has to be mounted central to the motorized mount. I then attached this to the supplied tripod, then downloaded the Matterport app form the Android play store. To use the app you have to register an account, for home use I opted for the free account. The free account is quite limited in that you can only store one processed 3D image, for professional use it would be best to subscribe, this gives the option to store more images. The software takes you through the steps for getting a 3D image of the room or area, and you can add extra floors. I found that the more positions in one roon the photos are taken from with Matterport Axis gimbal stabilizer and phone camera the better the stitching and image quality becomes. Each sweep is initial processed on the camera, but then multiple sweeps are uploaded and processed online, I found this could be very slow and was some time before I could view the result. The 3D results are really good allowing you to look at any part of the image at ant angle, I just wish this could be downloaded for personal consumption. Overall, I can see this being an excellent tool for advertising or building, whether personal or business. Alan

FOR 360 DEGREE PHOTOS (BUT HAS LIMITED USE)
Matterport Axis Gimbal Stabilizer for Smartphone Camera - Motorized Rotating Mount for Professional 3D 360 Photo Scans with Portable and Foldable Tripod. Firstly this is a motorised device that mounts on a lightweight tripod, holds a smartphone to take 360 degree 3D photographs. The “Axis” is extremely well made and comes on a hard shell protective zip case lined with high density foam, cut to accommodate all the parts. The kit includes... A motorised base which attaches to the tripod. An arm which holds your smartphone. A small remote control that attaches to the side of the arm. A USB-C to USB-C charging cable A brief instruction card. Since the base unit drives the 360 degree motion, it needs charging. There are four small green lights lit when it is fully charged. This motorised unit then attaches to the supplied tripod. The tripod is very lightweight and I found it only really stable at it's lowest height setting however it is only intended to carry your phone and the “Axis” and so will suffice. At it's lowest height it stands 14” high and at it's highest 46” high (this including the 9” centre column extension). The legs have three extensions and each is individually variable so accommodating ground that is not level. The arm fits easily onto the motorised base unit and the smartphone is attached to the side. It is necessary to down load the “Matterport Capture” app and following the instructions given will allow completion of the set up. There is a small “remote control” button (about 1” diam.) that connects to the side of the arm by magnet and this needs to be activated (tiny blue light) to start the operation. When the scan is about to start you will see a circle in the centre of the screen with a white dot and this has to be centred inside the circle. I imagined the 360 degree scan would be a sweep but is in fact a series of about 5-6 individual photos with the base unit moving to a new position for each capture. On the first run the image was unrecognisable and the image said to repeat it...it got better but was still not what I expected. I think this unit is designed especially for use to photograph interiors of rooms and present them in what they call a “dolls-house effect” showing the 3D effect to advantage. Quality gets better the more the unit is used and one becomes familiar with the quirks. Used as an amateur photographers tool it becomes an expensive “toy” and to be fair, all the presentation literature shows it's use in professional hands photographing building interiors. The app is initially free but only allows one scan. It carries an expensive monthly subscription which then allows multiply projects to be undertaken and stored. I have a gimbal which I use with a heavy DSLR on a tripod and that allows instant movement in any direction but I can also use it in a fixed horizontal position and take a series of photographs moving through 360 degrees and then stitch them together. I don't get the 3D effect but I get a usable 360 deg. picture. As I said before this is an extremely well made and engineered unit supplied with an adequate tripod (although the Axis will fit onto a better tripod using the 3/8” thread or the 1/4” adapter which are standard fittings). A great concept but has very limited use and will only pay back the expenditure in professional hands and for limited specific uses. Not for everybody.

Amazing tech
This isn't just your typical stabiliser, although it can be that if it needs to. Out of the box you get a gimbal and a tripod, it all fits in and works just fine. It's important to note that the case you store the gimbal in, is really nice, it's a hardshell case with custom cut foam on the inside, this is an expensive kit so it's important that you can store it safely. Super easy to setup, the gimbal folds up when it needs to be carried and it's easy to unfold and setup, you do need to download an app to get it all to work properly, however if you just want to use it as a stabiliser then you can use it without. You can only use this in the portrait position, which is ok although i wish i had the option for landscape as well. Once you download the app, it's easy to get it going, just press the scan and it will start scanning the whole room, the gimbal will move around and tilt the phone to scan the whole area, it does take a few tries to get it working alright, but it eventually gets there. The caveat here is that although the app is free, there is a monthly payment plan option there, considering how much this kit costs, i wouldn't expect for there to be any other extra costs. You can, not use the provided app if you like, i'm sure there are many other apps out there that are compatible and will work just fine. I have to say, having always done a room scan manually, i'm pleasantly surprised by how much better this kit works, you can press a button, get it going and not have to do much else, just sit back and get the results, it's saved me a lot of time and hassle for sure.

It can connect to your phone but the app can’t see it.
This is absolute rubbish. Watch my video and do not buy. The unit connects via Bluetooth yet the Matterport app is unable to connect to it. It’s practically useless!
