Q: can you buy new batterys when the time comes? and at what cost

Apparently, Makita 18v batteries work as may Makita compatible batteries. I have a 4.0 Ah Makita battery that runs the chainsaw (and my Makita drill) just fine. However, for Makita batteries, you need a Makita charger. Not sure about Makita compatible batteries working in the Makita charger. They may require a separate charger. Amazon also has some 21V batteries that might also work in the ChainSaw AND Makita tools. I've only tried the 18V Makita battery with the ChainSaw since I have a Makita drill. Also, while the Makita battery runs the chain saw, the chainsaw battery would not run my Makita drill. I don't notice a different in power between 18V and 21V batteries in a few cuts with either battery. The Makita battery I have is 4.0 Ah, so presumably it will cut more branches than the 2.0 Ah batteries. The Chainsaw battery cuts up to an hour for 1" or less branches. Less battery/cutting time with larger 4" branches. But still cuts quite some time with larger branches.

Q: does it take dewalt batteries

No. In fact my batteries have gone bad and I can't find replacements.
