Hyperkin RetroN 5 3-in-1 Adapter for Game Gear, Master System, and Master System Card

This works great for playing master system, master system card, and game gear games on your tv through the retron 5. The update to the retron 5 was a pain to do, but after updating I've had great success playing all 3 formats supported. I specifically got it due to all the screen issues with my game gear. Being able to play them on the tv is great.You can indeed use this as a power base converter on a compatible model Genesis. It will not play game gear games due to the additional colors. It will work fine for Master System and Master System card games. You can even plug in a Master System controller (with a genesis, not the retron 5). The only issue is that there is no pause button on the device itself. This doesn't matter with the retron since it handles assigning pause to the start button on the controller. But on an actual genesis, you won't be able to use that button since it doesn't map it to a genesis controller.

I tested it with my Cybergadget Retro Freak console, and the GG, SMS and card games, all of them, worked great.

I bought one of these and was very excited for it, but unfortunately the game gear part of the adapter did not work. I had the newest version of the console OS, like they say you need, but it did not matter. I called customer service and they had me send them pictures of the pins on the adapter, which did not seem to be defective, but they said to return it via amazon and get a new one, so i did. Also, their customer service only has one associate who knows how to "troubleshoot" this adapter. It was hard getting a hold of her because they would not allow me to leave my number, and she was often on lunch break or talking with someone else. Anyways, i got the new adapter and same exact thing. I called up CS again and Lupita, the rep, said i need to take video of it not working so they can get me a console and adapter that works. BTW my retron 5 has only been used for maybe 4 hours max, and it works perfectly, so i never found out what the issue was. I sent them the videos and screenshots and i got an email saying that i need to pay 80 dollars to get their defective product replaced plus shipping. Of course i did not pay this and returned everything. I was very excited to play my game gear games on the tv for the first time, but i will just have to let them sit in the closet longer until a more reliable company makes an adapter. Would not recommend.

I bought this so I could play my Game Gear games again since my handheld console no longer works. I definitely recommend playing with the video effects on the menu screen to optimize how you'd like to see a game meant for a handheld screen on a big TV. I've only used this for Game Gear so I can't comment on how Master System games work, but my GG games play great and I've had no issues with using the unit.

So the product works great out of box...the one big thing is due to the pins on the Adapter. This sucker takes some work to get it to sit properly in the retron5. You really wanna take your time and be careful when inserting it into the Correct slot.

Another user confirming that this Hyperkin 3-in-1 Adapter is compatible with not just the Retron 5 but also the Retro Freak (if the firmware has been updated). I popped it into the Genesis cart reader on my Retro Freak, and it read every one of my Master System titles. No issues using it for longer play sessions. The Retro Freak also had no issues dumping the ROMs through this adapter, either.Overall it's a pretty good deal if you have a collection of Game Gear or Sega Master System titles, or if you're looking to start collecting for those systems, and are playing your retro library on either a Retron5 or Retro Freak.

I almost left a bad review of this some time back when it wasn't working, but that was just because I failed to read the instructions. All you have to do is download the update to an SD card (there's a bit more to it but there's simple guides online), and boom, you are all set!Wish it would work on a real genesis, but that's obviously not what this product was for.
