Perhaps it's a newer or different model than you're familiar with. Or perhaps a spouse is forcing a sale of a beloved item, so the seller is technically listing it, but is also overpriced, in hopes of not actually selling it but remaining in compliance with the spouse. Who knows? But if it's not the one for you, you can always look at other listings. No need to call "foul" because a price doesn't align with your expectations. We can all be kind - that's free. :-)

What was wrong with this that it needed to be renewed?

I'm pretty sure that on listing like this from a company, they're usually selling many refurbished Switches, and not all of them have the same thing repaired. So there's probably really no way to find out. But I can tell you that the one I bought eight months ago for a Christmas present for my kids has worked perfectly from the very first day. No problems whatsoever. I hope you have good results as well.

why is this used/broken but fixed switch more money then a new one? (454$ vs 400$ for new)

Hard to say without knowing for sure if you're comparing the same models. My guess would be that you're comparing the newer OLED model (refurbished) with the previous model that has different graphics and half the storage. If that's not the case, and both items you're looking at are the exact same, you're right - that doesn't make sense, and I'd buy the less expensive brand new one. Just make sure you're comparing apples to apples. :)
