Can you attach a string to the cap or pull pin, so kids can sit out of the way and pull the string?

Absolutely! We recommend a thin sting to go around the pull pin and a light pull motion that won't break the geyser. Try it in your hands a couple of times before attaching the geyser to a bottle.

Does this only make one geyser or more than one? -- like can I keep re-using it as long as I buy new coke and new mentos?

Only one geyser. Yes, you can use it a lot of times. There is nothing to break by time, just be gentle when you putting it on bottle-you can throw mentos to coke by accident before you tighten it

Can I use carbonated soda water?

Haven't seen if it will work with anything other than soda, but it should work the same.... Give it a try.

I am thinking about ordering a few of these for an experiment with my students. Do you lose the tips when it explodes? Are the tips necessary?

The tips stay on. You can order the one with different tips its even more fun.my 8 yr old had a blast! Some tips shoot higher some have More then one stream.
