Do you you need to clean it first

I felt the need to wash it, but it can only be rinsed out at best. That is because the top doesn't come off (or not off easily). So I put considerable quantity of water in. Rolled it about and drained it into my garden. It seemed clean and not smelly, but I felt compelled to try to be sanitary.

There is a listing for pack of 1 and pack, what is a pack? is a pack 1 55 gallon drum?

From what I can make out of it, the 'pack' is simply the combination of units for sale. A 1 pack is a single drum - a 2 pack is two drums. There are other combinations of the drum and accessory packs to go with it - do some research, and you should find the same drum for around a hundred dollars, free shipping.

Does this barrel have a removable lid?

No. It has a cap and the siphon attaches to the cap. We've had these for a couple of years now and always hope we never have to use them.

What measure is a drum?

55 gallon is the top mark. Graduated in 5 gallon incrementally. At the 55 gallon mark you can put another 5 gallons in, up to the fill hole.

This is a heavy-duty, quality water storage barrel. But beware, the seller you choose matters. Pay the extra for Amazon. It will be the barrel pictured and delivered in a box. If you order from Ironclad, it will NOT be the barrel from Augasons and it will be delivered bare with just a shipping label slapped on the side. Thus, the many reviews where one or both of the plugs are missing. That does not happen with the boxed barrel.

In very cold weather, the bottom ballooned-out so the thing was like a weebel (toy.... "weebles wabble but they don't fall down")... So I had to stabilize it with wood, etc, as I live high up... cost $430 CAD... no warning given about cold weather use..

These drums (I have two of them) are pretty well built. I bought them to store emergency water in since the City was doing some water main upgrades. Things don't always go as planned so I wanted to be prepared. I also bought a couple of drum dollies so they roll around nicely in the basement even when filled.
