Is there a time limit for each item? We just got ultimate and there is a 15 second timer for each word - too fast for my family!

I've never heard of a way to recalibrate the timer. Maybe just use the timer on your phone instead.

Is "variety" all the other categories put together?

We got this for an upcoming beach trip and haven't used it yet. However, we had one before and as I recall "variety" means questions from any genre even outside the other categories on the game. Again, I can't swear to it, but that's my recollection ... more general category questions.

What age group is most appropriate for Catch Phrase ?

It is appropriate for ages 9 and up. We eliminated the entertainment category because the younger kids didn’t know all the entertainers. You can also skip an item if the kid doesn’t know what it is. Highly recommend!
