This is a fun toy and it is completely safe in that there ...
I'm giving this 3 stars. The pen itself gets 4.5-5 stars. This is a fun toy and it is completely safe in that there is no burn risk whatsoever. It usually works great, but has occasionally jammed and not fed the filament through properly. It's a sturdy pen, though, and any problems we've had with it have worked themselves out (sometimes right at the moment that I would decide it was time to contact the company). There is a bit of a learning curve to the pen, but once you figure it out, it's tremendous fun. The lowered rating for the pen is due to the fact that this thing eats filament like crazy. And the filament is expensive. I don't find that I get the output from a strand of filament that 3Doodler says you will get. My kids blew through the two packages of filament that came with this pen in only an hour. After that, we went online to buy more filament and learned that it is not only very pricey, but the filament colors are rather limited in their availability. If you want certain colors (like purple, for example), it may be impossible to find them. I have yet to find purple filament available for purchase on it's own. I have seen it as part of one of the 3Doodler Start Kits, but my boys don't want to buy something like a jewelry making kit for their 3DoodlerStart. They just would like some filament in the colors that are included in those special kits, but unfortunately, we haven't been able to find it. Anyone contemplating purchasing this should only do so if they can afford to buy the special filament that it requires. You should also take a look at the colors in the "Primary Pow" and the "Fire and Ice" filament packs to determine whether or not you can live with those likely being your only filament color choices available. I've had a hard time finding color choices outside of the ones in those packs.

Save your money, but a different brand
I would suggest buying a different brand than this one. You can only use the resin from doodler because of the diameter of the resin it's different from all other models out there. It's quite expensive to buy the name brand refills. I returned it and bought another brand, and we're able to use the generic resins, and it works fantastic, my 12 year old loves it.

daughter loves it
My daughter asked for this item and I was skeptical. She has enjoyed it a lot, reading the directions herself and easily figuring out how to use it. She has made flat items and some with much height. All seem recognizable. She is able to touch the project as soon as it comes out (which I thought would be too hot). Seems like a safe item for kids. I am also impressed that they maintain their shape. My slight complaint is the number of small excess pieces that occur when creating projects. Luckily my kid kept these on a plate to discard later, but other users may have less organized kids and end up with random pieces on the floor.

My poor choice
I should have investigated this "toy" in more detail before buying. The refills are small and outrageously priced. This child is bright so she may get some brief enjoyment from it but her parents will be stuck buying more overpriced refills or making some lame excuse why she can't use it. I think I will switch the name tags on her gifts so she thinks this piece of crap is from her other grandparents.

Easy to start using but fun only lasted a short while
Kids had a few hours of fun with the 3Doodler before losing interest after a couple days. Getting started was easy, as was cleanup. Kit included ideas to try, and kids met with immediate success on simpler projects. There was adequate supply of filaments, both in number a color to keep up with kids' creativity. Extrusion from the 3Doodler wasn't always consistent, so working on harder projects (like Eiffel Tower project included) proved unrewarding to kids. We didn't experience any of the jam problems reported elsewhere.

Best starter pen for little ones
Awesome starter kit for kids, my nephews 6-10yrs old LOVE it, unfortunately it broke within an hour of playing with it, but I’m certain it just happened to be the pen I got, I’m fully happy with my return, GREAT starter pen for young kids! Only thing I didn’t like is charging the pen but in retrospect not having the power cord in the way is MUCH better for tiny hands (kid hands) to hold and create

She is into crafts and like most gadgets
We purchased this for my 8 year old for Christmas. She is into crafts and like most gadgets, the novelty of this wore off after 1 use. It takes a long time to charge for the first time use. The things she makes break really easily even when it's made thick. It's fun, I think but she hasn't played with it since Christmas!

Bought this as a gift for my little cousin
She loves it! Se is very into arts and craft type activities, so I thought this would be a cool tech item to exercise some of her creative skills. Very cool, is a little tricky at first but once you get the hang of it you can make some cool 3D printed stuff.

A little expensive
This product is a good idea but in theory not really that great. It’s hard for a child to achieve any forms of shapes . Although my granddaughter did love it. I also found it quite expensive for what it was.

Five Stars
A fantastic product and so versatile! Easy to use for children as well, with supervision due to hot parts.

Lots of great coloured plastics included
Lots of great coloured plastics included. However, the plastic strands do not cool very quickly and you cannot draw up. You have to design on a flat surface and gradually build upwards.

3doodler
This is better than the adult version I have, love the fact that it's rechargeable and doesn't get too hot so child safe too. My 9 and 7 year olds love it.
