DISCLAIMER: this movie is not for everyone, but for anyone that this movie is for, you’ll love it. There is SO much more to this movie than a bunch of fart jokes and other forms of crude humor. It’s deep and dark and funny and altogether beautiful. I knew going into it that it was going to be weird. Think about it; a man, stranded on an island, ready to take his own life, finds a corpse, befriends it, and then the two adventure to find their way back to society. What’s not weird about that? Paul Dano plays Hank; an awkward young man who feels an overwhelming sense of being alone. He is ashamed to be alive, yet he has an appreciation and unique view of life. When Hank is stranded on an island and he is ready to end it all, he happens upon a corpse (Radcliffe). Hank names the corpse “Manny”, who starts to come to life in a most disarming and humorous way; flatulence. Yup…corpses release gas, and farts can be funny. Farts are the great equalizer...everybody does it. The conversations that the two craft are filled with symbolism and metaphors about society and life as a whole. Some of this is very obvious and some of it is SUPER subtle. From farts, to trash, to masturbation, to…well, they talk about so much...I don’t want to give too much away. You should take the journey for yourself. The acting is absolutely superb. Really, I was so impressed by Daniel Radcliffe. I mean, how does one play a corpse? Really? And yet, he does so in such a fantastic way. Paul Dano is so sincere in his portrayal of Hank. What's more, there are some truly beautiful moments with framing and lighting and color...I really wish that I knew more about film so that I could convey this to you. Swiss Army Man is quirky…no, scratch that…it is, without a doubt, weird. You'll find that the word "weird" is repeated in the movie, too. A lot. So much so, that you'll start to question what "weird" really means. What it means to one may not be the same that it means to another. It is this movie's weirdness that makes it uniquely beautiful and gross and funny and sad and charming and oh so amazing. Just like the characters. Just like life. I kind of loved this movie.

I don't think I have laughed that hard in quite some time. From beginning to end it is full of absolutely ridiculously silly humor and shouldn't be taken seriously. The ending was fantastic and had me absolutely rolling. If you enjoy farts, dark humor, and humor that makes you go "what in the f..." then this movie is most certainly for you.

so yes a lot of fart jokes/references but that aside this crazy film took me on a bizarre journey often leaving me lost in my thoughts and memories of growing up in the pacific northwest. great movie if you are into films like thumbsucker, I heart huckabees, Donny darko etc. this film has that dark shade of humor that almost gives you a shiver of guilt for finding it funny or relatable similar to the movies I listed above. not a fast paced action flick by any means either but a film that will make you think, make you laugh, and just make you feel better about life in general it drifts back and forth from melancholy to hope and then despair that only a 16-26 year old struggling adult can literally live in and understand but we can relate to as we have all lived through something like it at one point. give it a watch and stick through the first 10 minutes it gets so much better... and Dano and Radcliffe have that awkward chemistry that really contributes to a movie like this capability of being a truly unique and amazing film, thoroughly enjoyed it. nice soundtrack with mostly original songs that neatly fit the movies scenes.

Weird movie, totally weird. The farts were overdone, but just grit your teeth and try to bare with it. Because once you get past the first 15-20 minutes, you'll see some of the funniest scenes that will make you laugh out loud. Daniel Radcliffe was surprisingly hilarious. I didn't realize he could be so funny. His voice was perfect, and the humor was quite intelligent despite being a bit juvenile. It's kinda fun, if you go along for the ride. Watch Radcliffe's face, and see the terrific acting he did. Look closely at the quick scenes, because the details are very, very funny and clever. You may end up rewinding a few times to catch it all. Yes, it's weird, but it's also surprisingly funny. Reminded me a lot of Castaway crossed with Weekend at Bernie's. That said, I do agree with other reviewers that the ending was totally lame. The last 15 minutes were a complete disaster, and made no sense whatsoever. Not like the rest of it made sense, haha, but at least it was easy to follow along with the imagination. In fact, it was like watching a live action Calvin & Hobbes episode, if one existed. But the ending here sucked, and I wish the writers hadn't gotten so carried away. Overall through I'm glad I was watched it. I don't understand one of the reviewers, who said she got so sick she threw up. What? Really?? Anyway, Radcliffe made the movie work. Without him, it might have completely bombed. But he was worth watching and listening to. I'm still chuckling when I think of some of those scenes.

The best movie I have ever seen. Hands down. I understand why some people may wish to give it zero to one stars, I really do, but this movie is the perfect commentary on the idea of life and society. The question of "why" seems to be the central overall idea while hinting at breaking down social barriers. If you begin the movie and turn it off just because a corpse is farting way to much, you have not even cracked the surface of why it was important to make it a ridiculous scene. The entire movie points out the ridiculous in our every day lives and does it in a intelligent way that sometimes is also ridiculous. If you think about a child who has a doll and that doll somehow is capable of astounding things, though the child's eyes, you can begin to fall into the mindset of the main Character, Hank, and see why it is so important to have a companion. His doll, however, is a corpse. My suggestion: just watch the movie all the way through. Try not to watch it for a particular reason, ie comedy, romance, etc. Just sit down with an open mind and listen. It is a wonderful story. It truly is a movie about happiness, sadness, love, hate, growth, decay, and so much more. And somehow kept me laughing the entire time. I didn't have high hopes, I was very wrong.

Paul Dano (cave man like figure)+ Daniel Radcliffe (the dead man who speaks miraculously). And the gay couple director who always work together Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert. Well, this gay couple director made some serious art of fantasy world I cannot deny that they were influenced from the great director Michel Gondry. I can see his movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Science of Sleep from this film. It was all possible because the production company was not like Sony or Universal. It was just a small Independent film companies joined to make this happened. After a few shorst and some TV movies this is their first feature and it happens to be the most artistic feature debut ever made. At the beginning I had a huge doubt since there is fart joke and all. But when the dead body Daniel Radcliffe begins to talk (this might be all Paul Dano fantasy since he was about to kill himself in the middle of nowhere and he just wanted to find an excuse not to and he happens to find this dead body from the current which is Daniel) First Daniel just farts big time. Then he begins to inject water from his mouth which make Paul able to drink water, I think it was clean enough. Then he miraculosuly begin to talk. But he couldn't move at all. No muscle movement or anything. Just when he sees a beautiful picture of a girl he moves his peanutes like eraction happens kind of funny. But the thing is he lost all the memory and Paul has to teach all the human words to him. Sex, masterbation, love, life and such. Slowley Paul opens himself to him. Sometimes it seems like Daniel's alive seems all Paul's creation but then again, he seems just miracle. They were connected. Then when the bear attacked Paul he again miraculously begins to move! Not in a normal way but more like one of those clay animation like movement. Paul has this one parted love affair with this lady who has a family the name is Mary Elizabeth Winstead (I first noticed her from the movie FINAL DESTINATION 3. She was a beauty). But Paul was a recluse and he had no courage to approach her before. Now that he has Daniel, they decided to go and meet her. When they do so, they were a big joke, a big news to the neighbour, The news team came to shoot them. The father of Daniel came to collect the body since he was dead. What? He was dead? So this is all just fantasy that Paul created? Who knows. That was the time Daniel again farted big time. He was not really dead. Then when Paul brought him back to the sea, he begins to float by and dissapears into the ocean. Paul was survived because of Daniel that is for sure. He was about to hang himself in a rope at the beginning. Then he found Daniel. That was not a fantasy. You still will never forget the fantasy world that paul created. They were so beautiful and it was like one of those Oz world, no it was more then that. Something that you can see from the movie <SCIENCE OF SLEEP> or any other great fantasy films. And becasue of those moments, this movie will be remembered forever in our heart.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers in review. I really wish I could get these 97 minutes back. Everyone involved in this film and anyone who favorably reviewed it owes me these 97 minutes of my life back. This is a truly horrible movie. I watched it because of Sundance's involvement and all the positive reviews I've heard and read, not only here on Amazon, but elsewhere. Boy were they wrong or I just don't "get" it. Let me explain. Yes, lots of dick and fart jokes, but I really thought they were going somewhere with the storyline about this beautiful "girl" Paul Dano's character, Hank, was in love with and I thought maybe there was going to be some nice tidying up of the story once he found his way back to civilization and used the courage he found in the wilderness to speak to her, but noooooo they pull the rug out from under me and it turns out Hank is just a nutcase who has apparently been camping out in the woods behind the "girl's" house who actually turns out to be a married woman with a preschool aged child. Hank had apparently lost his grip on reality and has been living a total delusion about being lost and had set up a whole little civilization of his own in the woods behind her house. You're now sitting there staring at the screen thinking, "Wait...what was real and what was delusion about the last 90 minutes?" Oh and THEN it gets weird. "Then?" Yes...I know right? There's a very disturbing scene where Daniel Radcliffe's character, Manny, gets an erection in front of the little girl and Hank smacks the erection down. That's some pretty horrible and desperate stage parents to let their little girl be in this movie by the way, but I digress. Anyway, then the movie races towards its non-sensical ending with Hank stealing Manny's corpse and dry-humping it down the hill in the woods back into the river that leads back to the beach from the beginning of the movie where Manny then farts his way back into the ocean and off into the sunset with a big smile on his face. The end. What??? I can't even imagine how the pitch meeting for this movie went, and how it was ever green-lighted, even though it is an indie, is beyond me. Don't waste your time. Just don't.

A lot of negative reviews highlighting the crude humor. I'm not a huge fan of crude humor however I felt "the Daniels" brandished the crude humor- as well as the high brow jokes- like a storytelling weapon. This is a very dark film about a very real kind of person: someone afraid and ashamed of being alive and by extension ashamed and afraid of his body and need for human community. And yet, perhaps because he's a living thing, he's determined to live. The absurdity of this condition, which is not a new condition in literature, is dramatized beautifully by his relationship with a farting corpse. I'll let you discover the depth of how and why so just give this movie a chance. Its an exploration of existential terror in a playful, fearlessly raw narrative that is clearly and precisely told. There is very little frivolity in this seemingly frivolous comedy. Plus it has awesome production design and music and watch it for Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe's performances alone. These guys are GREAT ACTORS. Truly exceptional work.

Daniel Kwan mette subito le cose in chiaro con lo spettatore circa il tipo di film che sta per guardare: nei primi otto minuti circa del suo film mostra un uomo con un cappio al collo che viene emotivamente “colpito” e scosso da un cadavere…un cadavere che fa qualcosa che non posso anticipare. E la sequenza che segue, quella dei titoli d’apertura, in mare, con Paul Dano a cavallo di “non vi posso di nuovo dire cosa”, dove a tutti noi vien sbattuto in faccia qualcosa di crudo e grottesco…respingerà parecchi. Ecco, Kwan è chiarissimo, ve lo dice senza mezzi termini come il personaggio di Manny farà sempre con quello di Hank: “Se questi due non li amate fin da ora, e non siete disposti a vedere un’altra ora e passa di pellicola similare, eco…l’uscita per di là. Non disturbate nessuno, siamo ai titoli di apertura…” Andarsene o bloccare la visione secondo me è più che possibile. Ma se non scapperete, per quanto mi riguarda vedrete una delle cose più singolarmente tenere e appassionate, grottescamente oneste e vere messe in scena da un po’ di anni. La storia di un’ amicizia, che forse è amore-ma perché distinguere sempre le due cose?- tra un uomo disperato ma pieno di curiosità e risorse alle quali aggrapparsi, sul ciglio di un abisso dal quale cerca di uscire anche a suon di pazzia, e…un cadavere al suo risveglio in un mondo che non comprende ancora, e che tratta con l’ingenuità e la tenerezza di un bambino. Una storia di “ritorno alla vita” attraverso l’onestà, l’accettazione, la condivisione di ciò che è serio come di ciò che è “sciocco”; un rapporto tra due spiriti persi nelle proprie solitudini, che camminano in bilico sulla linea di confine, lontano dal resto del mondo. Una storia che affonda le mani in domande fondamentali, ma con schiettezza, e non si gira dall’altra parte davanti a quesiti scomodi, e argomenti che un presunto decoro proibirebbe: immerge le mani nel fango, ride in faccia ai tabù, affronta realtà sciocche, demenziali, fuori luogo, che qualcuno potrebbe considerare grottesche e infantili…”non-arte”. “Non-bellezza”. E ne tira fuori un’opera d’arte che diverte, emozione, stupisce, disorienta e ri-orienta di continuo. Se di Paul Dano si sapeva che fosse davvero bravissimo, casomai vi venisse in mente di continuare a dire che Daniel Radcliffe non sa recitare, anche dopo aver visto questo film, permettetemi di consigliarvi un dottore. Meritatissimo cult, che crescerà- io spero- nel tempo in visione e cultori.

No la hay en pañol, pero no me importa porque me gusta sin doblar

Se film est audacieux, ambitieux et fou... Il mélange l'humour absurde et la comédie dramatique, un cocktail improbable mais, sa marche super bien... Se longt métrage arrive à rendre à merveille l'absurde en comédie dramatique poignant. Donc certe, ont rie devant se film mais, c'est un film dramatique. Par exemple, bon, je vous dit rien du film mais, il y a la dernière scène qui nous fait nous sentir entre deux émotions, une sorte de sourire jaune avec des larmes pour vous illustré si vous voulez, est quand on connaît, on voit que sa fait raccord avec une autre scène du début, comme un clin d'œil de la scène qui lui était plus drôle, mais la, c'est fait sous un autre angle, sa prend une autre dimension..., c'est poignant tout en restant absurde, parce que le film est absurde mais c'est bien fait, c'est cohérent... Ici c'est pas absurde pour faire de l'absurde, c'est un absurde de génie... J'aimais un film loufoque comme celui-ci m'avait procurer autant d'émotions. Je pense qu'à l'avenir ce film deviendra culte... C'est vraiment une vision du cinéma incroyable...

This is truly a unique film. Daniel Radcliffe was perfect for this part. Looks like they had a hoot making it👏
