I have a straight crack in a hard plastic hydroponics water bucket that holds 3 gallons of water. will this seal it so it can hold water again?

Not on its own. This product only holds two broken edges together at the weld points. It may work if you glue the edges first, then weld.

Does this make a water tight seal ?

It doesn't make any seal but by melting the staples into the plastic it does melt closed. However if manipulated a little it could probably seal something water tight using the metal tip.

Will this work well for storage-bin bottom repairs? e.g. lightweight bins with the flap lids I have several with cracked bottoms

If the thickness of the bottom of the plastic storage box exceeds 2 millimeters, it can be repaired. Plastic that is too thin is easily punctured by hot staples.

No that’s not normal, at least in my experience, I worked with mine for quite a while and never had an issue with it going into thermal protection while I put a vehicle HVAC box back together
