Soul Brother #1, the Godfather of Soul, Mr. Dynamite are all titles that have been applied to James Brown over the years. A hugely influential figure in black American music, he was a driving force in the development of soul music in the early '60s and funk in the early '70s. He has had more R&B hits in the US than any other artist, and has charted singles in countries around the world. One of the defining elements of James Brown's career has always been his electrifying live show and his performances at Montreux give ample evidence of this. This DVD focuses on his choice as the best of them all from 1981. It's a string of hits from start to finish delivered with all the flamboyant style and showmanship for which he is rightly famous.

Needed Some James Brown
and since I collect all the Montreux shows this was no exception and a wise purchase, indeed. Won't go into detail about the details but this man didn't have to go to a gym to get his cardio exercise in, that's for sure! What a workout. I was sweating to the oldies just watching this play out. You will too!

Without A Doubt
I don't think I've ever witnessed a more intense, hard-driving, relentless display of pure energy and talent than I just did watching this video.James Brown is without a doubt not only the hardest working man in show business, but also has the most stamina and staying power.I actually felt sorry for his musicians on the stage - not even a bathroom break! But if he is incredibly talented, so is everyone in his band.Maybe not as much as him, but in their area of expertise, they shine, and even radiate a glow of excellence. This production was fantastic - from the camera work, the sound, the direction, everything was fabulous. The only mystery is why the cameraman seemed to deliberately turn the camera away when James was doing his incredible dance steps. And he did it repeatedly - every time James Brown would start to dance, the camera was looking at something else.Maybe the cameraman was jealous.Anyway, nobody puts on a more frenetic show than this.Great, and great! You'll love it.

Stray Cats are young, lean and mean
This video captures a young, talented and hungry trio playing rockabilly as if their lives depend on it. The music is pure rockabilly, but performed with a punk sensibility. A mixture of covers tunes and original compositions, including a rare lead vocal by the stand up bassist Lee Rocker on "Drink Your Bottle Down". Barely into his twenties Setzer is already a very accomplished player. Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom play and perform hard, never letting the bottom fall out. A great snapshot of rock and roll being snatched back from the disco days. This is how rock and roll should be played. I encourage any fan of The Stray Cats, rockabilly, punk, or incredible guitar playing to buy this DVD.

Great performance, but poor video quality
Several reviews here talk about the high quality of sound and video. Not so. Maybe if you're watching it on a 19" TV, but I bought it to use with my home theater system, projecting image onto a large screen. The video is absolutely lousy, and the sound only acceptable. I suppose this was originally filmed with the technology of the day in mind. Back in the early '80's, the largest television screen was probably 24 inches. But, blown up to today's large screen sizes, the video is sorely lacking in every way.Having said that, James' performance is top notch. The high energy is there, he's in great voice and they put on a great show. This DVD is definitely worth a watch, and worthy of your collection, but don't expect too much as far as picture or sound quality by today's standards.

STRAY CATS LIVE AT MONTREUX 1981
IF YOU'RE A STRAY CATS FAN, YOU'LL LOVE THIS EARLY CONCERT FOOTAGE. SETZER PLAYS MORE TO THE ORIGINAL SOUND RECORDINGS, UNLIKE A LOT OF THE B.S.O. CONCERT FOOTAGE YOU SEE TODAY. THEY EVEN DO A VERSION OF GENE VINCENT'S PRETTY PRETTY BABY, WHICH THEY NEVER RECORDED. FOR THIS PRICE IT'S A GREAT ADDITION TO A COLLECTION. - C.C.

Obra maestra

The Stray cats
