Does it work if you are making character jeans on dark jean fabric? Some characters are all white

Yes. It is fabric paint. But, it does start to fade over several times through the wash. I use it to put the name inside my kids pants, and I can still read the names after multiple washes. But if I had used it on the outside of the pants for charactors, I think I would be disappointed that it fades.

How to preserve the fabric markers ink once it is applied to the fabric?

You could use something like Mod Podge fabric. It is a clear sealant you would have to paint over the design you make with this marker but it will seal it in with a clear coat.

I have followed directions for first time use and pen still is not working.....What am I doing wrong?

Shake the pen and make sure you can feel the "ball" inside that helps make sure the ink gets mixed very well. If you don't feel the ball moving tap the pen gently on the top and bottom to loosen the ball. After shaking take the cap off and press down on a paper and the ink should flow as you begin to draw a line. Do this on a piece of waste paper than use it on the item you intend to mark.;
