Checkerboard End Grain Cutting board

Each board is painstakingly hand created by the woodworker one at a time. As such each board is will be slightly different and some variation is to be expected. This board is made from 100% end grain Hard Rock Maple, Black Walnut, and Cherry wood for a superior look and feel. Each board is made with FDA approved wood glue and treated with mineral oil and beeswax for a superior finish. Why end grain? End grain allows the knife's edge to go between wood fibers. Edge grain boards have their wood fibers severed by the knife as you cut, which leads to splintering. End grain is also gentler on the blade then edge grain, meaning knifes will require less sharpening over time. The design of an end grain board is such that it if properly cared for an end grain board can last a lifetime. End grain boards are more labor intensive then edge grain boards. A simple edge grain board can take one day to make, while more complex end grain boards can take up to a week. This extra labor is why an end grain board is more expensive then edge grain. This extra labor is well worth it for a board that not only looks great, but will last much longer in your kitchen. Caring for end grain boards. End grain boards should be hand washed with gentle dish soap with warm water and air dried. Never place an end grain board in the dishwasher, hot steam can cause warping. For the same reason never soak an end grain board in standing water. The water will cause the wood fibers to swell and will weaken the joints of the board, causing it to split or break. Every six months the board should be treated with a layer of mineral oil and bees wax conditioner. This conditioner is sold at most hardware supply companies and can be found by asking for "Cutting board" or "butcher block" conditioner. Care should be taken to ensure only mineral oil is used as oil repels water from the wood helping it to remain sanitary and less likely to swell and split.
