Q: What are the washing instructions?

I found that if you wash this bag too many times, then the inside of the bag will begin to tear & disintegrate, whether you wash it in the washing machine or have it dry-cleaned (like I did). My solution right now, is not to wash it anymore; rather, just spot-clean by hand, as necessary. While this bag is wonderful, I must say that its durability doesn’t seem to match the ones we used when I was in, during the 80's. Those bags, we could just throw in the washing machine & dryer, and everything would be fine. Sadly, that’s not the case for these wonderful replicas. Yes, even though I truly do love this bag, it just doesn't have the durability on the inside fabric, like the sleeping bags we had during the Cold War. If you MUST clean it, I would consider getting your bag dry-cleaned, as this is the gentler of the two washing options. I hope this helps.

Q: do these have a musty smell to them?

The one I received was sealed in a plastic bag. Mine came without any musty smell. This is my second one of these bags in 28 years.
