I got this whistle to put in my emergency kit for when I go hunting or camping. I read a number of reviews that mentioned the effort required to blow the whistle, and compared its sound to those of other whistles. The sound is not a referee's whistle with the "pea" in it; it emits a high-pitched piercing sound that I have no doubt would be heard from a long ways away. Although I warned my wife before I did it ("Baby, I'm about to blow this whistle."), the noise it made was so loud and piercing, she jumped a mile high and was upset with me for a good 20 minutes. I have to admit, my ears were ringing for a few minutes afterwards. If something should happen when I'm in the great outdoors, I will be glad to have this whistle in my emergency kit.

WOW this thing is loud. I didn't test it against a sound level meter, but I will tell you the warnings on the package say not to use for extended periods or use near anyone's ears and they are definitely warranted. When used for the first test, it left my ears ringing. I picked up the direct competitor (Storm) to this whistle at the same time for comparison and I can say I believe this one is louder.

Love these new whistles!! They have amazing tone and the Fox40 family has always held up well!!

Great little whistle. It's so light to wear that you forget you have it around your neck and the colors are fun. It is also pretty loud. My training partner and I wear them when we trail run as we have lots of coyotes where we live and they will sometimes follow us. They're probably not dangerous but it is kind of intimidating. The whistle and waving of arms scares them off. It's exactly what we were looking for.

Uniqueness. Small w/a Big noise. Using it for training and so far it's doing well. Think it's a bit $$ for small plastic but in the it may be worth every dollar.

It has a very loud and annoying sound which can be heard far, which is exactly what I bought it for. Looks like it will last a long time. 4/5 because the strap is a bit crappy, but will do the job.
