NINESTARS DZT-80-4 Automatic Touchless Motion Sensor Oval Trash Can, 21 Gal. 80 L., Stainless Steel

Pros of can: stainless steel doesn't absorb odor, easy to clean, non rusting, good-looking, PERFECT size I only take trash out once a week and I'm not European by any means, fun-to-use, odor sealing lid, and heavy enough that a dog isn't very likely to knock it over. Again the size is like just right; it won't get to smelly sitting in there for too long, but it also won't fill up to quickly. If your dog is prone to this behavior, just go to the scrap yard and throw some lead weights in the bottom. More pros: there's a switch letting you turn off the sensor right in the middle back of the can under the lid, so if it opening when you walk past or a ghostly breeze passes by that won't be a problem. The lid stays propped open when the sensor is off, and can be opened manually without damaging anything. This isn't a cheap can, its obviously been well vetted by its engineers. The liner-retaining-ring makes it easy to place a bag and remove without getting your hands messy or spilling anything, and unless you're tossing rocks or gravel in here I don't see the bag slipping beneath the liner-retaining-ring. Also: you can fit things as-large or even slightly larger than a full gallon of milk container through the mouth of the lid of the can. I personally squish my empty plastic gallon containers to make more space and recommend it, but its good to know this is possible. This of course has a downside in that the perimeter of the can's non-lid opening (when you remove the lid) is to large for most bags, but I've solved that in the video posted. Negatives: bags are a huge challenge to find (edit: bags that aren't overpriced). Virtually every draw string bag out there doesn't fit, and drawstring bags are virtually always made with seams that make them prone to tears if you try to stretch, this can has an unusually large mouth and will only fit non-drawstring contractor bags. For someone like me who lives in a studio, you want a bag that has drawstrings to reduce odor so you don't have a smelly-smell when you accumulate one or two bags before trash pickup. Ninestars sells bags for the can, but they're 3x-4x the price (about a dollar a bag) of a typical garbage bag which is for me unacceptable. I didn't buy a great can to in-debt myself further with 3rd party bags. Other cons: a small number of people have had sensor issues, but these can all be resolved with a simple reset which is included in the instruction manual. The motor on average seems to last 1-3 years judging by the reviews here and the fact that most people don't write reviews. That being said, a medium minority have issues from the motor being damaged sometimes due to inadvertent damage from pushing down or forcing up the lid while the sensor is on. The lid cannot be opened manually while the sensor is on! There are two buttons "open" and "close" which allow you to open the can with the motor when the lid is "on", but you can't pick up the lid or push it down with the lid set to "on". its easy to turn the lid off for manual use; the switch is water proofed by a plastic cover and is in the center below the hinge of the lid on the interior backside of the can lid. Easy to do without lifting off the lid, which isn't difficult either. I believe that many of the people claiming their can broke within the first day or week simply didn't read instructions and made the mistake of forcing the lid while it was "on", as most people don't read instructions for your garbage can and its an easy mistake to make (speaking of which, turn off the lid when you have company over, and just leave it propped open). Tbh, the only problem most buyers will face is the lack of bags available (which I have solved in this video) and one last problem: potential liner-retaining-ring fragility. The liner retaining-ring is made of plastic and doesn't appear to be a particularly resilient or flexible plastic alloy. I wouldn't flex it very much, but to remove the bag you have to remove the retaining-ring and over time you run the risk of accidentally snapping it by say, putting it on the ground while you tie-up/remove the bag and pushing it between the can and the wall. The ring can be purchased on ninestars website but for 10$+13$ shipping, which is ridiculous for such a small part. Just put it somewhere where you won't kick it or anything while switching out bags, like a counter top. Pros-or-Cons-depending-on-who: This can uses 3 D-size batteries only; I've seen easy mods a non-electrician can do with a soldering iron that will allow you to make a plug for the can. From my usage, I only use hands-free sensor when cooking and I need my hands free, and these batteries should last 6 months or longer with that level of use. The batteries are about a dollar each so its really not that bad either. I prefer batteries because I like to be able to pickup and move my can when needed without the hassle of finding a wall outlet. Also, the lid isn't metal but rather a metal-painted plastic, but I don't think anyone really cares it doesn't make a difference. Also the bottom of the can isn't continuously metal, rather its made of some kind of black plastic; I don't know how this effects durability of the can. It could enhance life or shorten it; I'm guessing its better, a metal bottom can be bent and cause the can to wobble or be disbalanced, whereas the tough plastic-rubber bottom of this can appears to be more flexible; it also reduces the unpleasant "gong" like sound you get when moving a metal can. Apart from these few problems, this is an excellent can and well/fairly priced by the company. This is THE best can out there for your average Joe; For only 10$ more than a typical rubber-maid(TM) can you can get something that has hands-free action. Simple Human is over priced, even 65$ for a trash can is overpriced, you might think. But once you have this can, and you see the way it makes you enjoy picking up and keeping clean, $65 will seem like an investment in your future and a change to a new way of life you could have never before imagined for yourself. Yes I'm being a little extra, but I'm also being sort-of serious. I used to be a lazy dirty college student and this can has changed my life. Thank you ninestars for representing what is "Good and Green" in the world, as Sam Wise Gamgee might say. Just make that flimsy liner-retaining-ring out of a stronger plastic alloy and this will be the can of Emperors, and archaeologists will dig it up and believe we were a hobbit-sized people of beautiful satiny steel sarcophagi. This can is the ultimate in the evolution of garbage cans; I mean yeah if they said "thank you for stuffing me" or breathed sighs of relief every time you changed the bag that'd be cool, or if they ground your trash up into compost automatically or sorted refuse into recycables or by color or whatever... yada yada that would be cool. But if you want those things you're like a Vegan who doesn't eat Tofu. Get this can. Just get it and change your life for the better. Stop researching garbage cans for goodness sake all the info is here just buy the stupid can. Put googly eyes on it and name it after someone you hate, I don't care what you do just buy the can so the company stays in business and I can buy another one every 3-5 years for the rest of my life without scouring craigslist ads or ebay. This is the logitech z2300 of the garbage can world, it will rise in value after purposely poorly engineered cans which are designed to fail and be re-bought dominate the market and you're forced to buy a brand new z623 (not a bad subwoofer at all, I use and prefer this but the z2300 is better) because all the z2300s on craigslist are now 2-3x their original value 10+ years after manufacture. GET. THE. CAN.

I was a little hesitant to order this based on some of the reviews, and the price. However, when this came up in a "Today's Deals," I decided to go ahead and risk ordering it, and I'm very glad I did. Pros: 1. For a trash can, it looks great. I have all black and stainless steel appliances, so this thing fits right in. 2. I love having the lid open by itself, especially when my hands are full. I've had experience with trash cans that have foot pedals, and sometimes one has to give the pedal a pretty good stomp to get the thing opened. 3. The odd size doesn't allow for one to get garbage bags that fit it perfectly, but a 30 gallon bag does just fine. Some of the bag hangs over the sides, but that doesn't bother me Cons: 1. While the lid works great most of the time. it's very, very sensitive. Sometimes, when we get anywhere near the thing, it opens up when we don't want it to. Every once in awhile, I have to wave my hand over the sensor a few times before it opens, but that doesn't happen very often. 2. Also, I wish this had been made for an AC adapter as an alternate power source. For this much money, it should have been. However, as long as the batteries last for a decent period of time, that isn't a major concern. I'm really curious as to how long the batteries are going to last, especially when we use it several times a day, every day. When they finally die on us, I'll update. Overall, I'm very happy with this product, and highly recommend it. ***UPDATE 6/4/2014*** I said I'd update when the batteries died, and yesterday, after four months of use, we had to change batteries. I would say that we're moderate to heavy users of this trash can, so having to change the batteries after four months isn't an issue. I still love this trash can, and am happy that I was able to get it. ***UPDATE 1/9/2015*** Last month, the lid stopped working. It wouldn't even lift when I pushed the button. I contacted Nine Stars customer service, and they said to take the batteries out, clean off the sensor, and wait 24 hours. I did that, and it worked well for one whole day. They told me that, if it was still under warranty, I could send it to them for repair or replacement. I haven't decided whether or not I'm going to go to the trouble and expense of sending the lid back. I don't know how much it will cost, but if it's too much, I'll just put up with raising it manually. For what this thing cost, that lid should last for years, not less than a year. It was great while it was working, though.

I had to remove one star (and really, that should only be half a star) because the instructions that came with the can stated it took four "D" batteries. When I ran out of room after I'd inserted the third I called Customer Service (which gets the full five stars). It turns out that three batteries is the correct number on the "newer models" and my instructions were outdated. The can arrived in pristine condition, thanks to half a tree's worth of cardboard. Construction appears to be solid and all pieces fit well. It looks really spiffy sitting in my kitchen and I heaved a sigh of relief when I sent the old plastic can, with the big rubber band around the top, to the garage. The capacity is impressive and since it's just me (and the cats and guinea pig) here it looks like we may be down to just one bag per week instead of the usual two. I did not have 28-gallon bags but managed to stretch a standard tall kitchen garbage bag around the rim. They'll do 'til I can get the bigger bags. Because of the rim design, no part of the bag shows...another nice touch. The sensor light is not terribly sensitive. It doesn't pop open when I walk by. My hand (or whatever I'm pitching) needs to be within six inches of the light before it will open. It's not as quick as tossing an item in an open can, of course, but remarkably fast given what it needs to do. It's especially nice not to be looking at an open bag full of garbage. The can is brand new, so I can't say anything about battery life or the longevity of the mechanism. If either turn out to be a problem I'll update this review. I get such a kick out of watching it operate I'm thinking of naming it. Any suggestions? Edit: It is now seven months after I purchased the NINESTARS garbage can. It still works flawlessly (though it takes a moment to wake up in the morning) and it's still on THE ORIGINAL BATTERIES. I'm adding back the star I took off for incorrect instructions. The can itself is absolutely perfect and does not deserve to be downgraded because of a human mistake. I continue to be amazed at what large items the can will accept, especially flattened cardboard boxes. They go nicely along the back side of the can, which is pretty flat. Last but not least, there's a lot of entertainment value here, what with trying to get everything in before the lid closes and watching visitors' reaction when they get near it and the top opens. My neighbor's boy named it Willy. I have no idea why. Further edit: It is now fifteen months since Willy arrived. He still works flawlessly, though a couple of times he has opened on his own...probably a moth or fly went through the beam. The can looks exactly like it did when I got it. I've whacked it a couple of times with the back door but it hasn't dented or scratched. Batteries have been changed once in those fifteen months. I would never, ever buy a different garbage can. Further edit, 08JAN20: Two and a half years in the can is still working flawlessly and I've changed the batteries twice. It's been knocked over, kicked and whacked by accident several times. There's not a dent or scratch on it. The sensor on mine isn't as sensitive as others report. It does not open when you walk past it. You do have to place something within six inches of the sensor to open it. In a world where eighteen months seems to be the average life of a small mechanical object this garbage can is a breath of fresh air.

I know it sounds weird, but I absolutely love this garbage can and I rarely fall in love with anything because I'm pretty good at finding something to complain about, but this can is the best. I love it for the following reasons: 1) it can hold a 30-gallon trash bag and we only need to empty the trash once/week (we're a 2 person household). My initial concern was that this can was going to look ridiculously big when I read other reviews that say it holds such a large bag, but it actually doesn't look commercial or out-of-place in our kitchen. It's pretty amazing that it can hold as much garbage as it does, but still maintains a reasonable size. I think this has something to do with the design of the top. The volume of garbage can go all the way to the top of this can because the lid is a cut-out at the top 2) even with a weeks' worth of garbage, it doesn't stink. Okay, if you stick your head in the can, it will stink, but when the lid is closed, there is no foul odor whatsoever 3) I like that you can hide the edges of the bag opening within the can, so it doesn't look messy 4) it's easy to clean - just wipe it down with a rag, if necessary 5) it does have 2 buttons on the top ('Close' and 'Open' in that order, which still throws me off - for some reason, I expect the 'Open' button to be on the left) that allow you to manually open and close the lid. I wasn't aware of this option at first, so when I was peeling carrots into the trash can, I was getting frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to keep the lid from closing after a few seconds until my dear, smart husband pointed out the buttons to me. With that said, I don't find that the lid shuts too fast when in touchless mode, but I like the idea of being able to have the manual mode available if I'm in need of an open trash receptacle. I read in the one of the reviews that the infrared sensor is on the front of the can and that every time they walked it by, it would open. Maybe, they have a different model because the one we have has the sensor on the top of the can and so we just need to wave our hands (or elbow) over the top of the can and so it's never opened when just walking by it. It really is a great trash can and based on the prices of its competitors, it's a great deal. We've only owned it for 4 months, so I can't speak to the durability of it or the battery life (still the same batteries, though, from day 1), but I hope it lasts a long while. It's surprisingly lightweight, too. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. We don't have children or pets in our household, so I don't know how it would hold up to that kind of traffic, but for hubby and me it's been great. This is definitely one of the better purchases I've made and one of the few where I'm thoroughly satisfied; I don't have anything negative to say about.

We have had this garbage can for nearly three weeks. PROS: Great price, It's well made, has a large capacity due to not having an inner liner, and it looks great. The no touch lid is a great idea. You can hear the gears and motors when it opens and closes, but not annoying. CONS: Biggest downfall is the sensor is too sensitive and there is no way to adjust it. Unless you place the can in a no traffic area the lid will constantly open and close when you walk by. It would be perfect if it had different levels of sensitivity. Even a low/high sensitivity setting would make a tremendous difference! The only other downfall is that you cannot use the standard 13 gallon trash bags due to the size of the ring. The 13 gallon bags are nice since they come with draw strings and scents. Most 13 gallon cans do not accommodate the full size of the 13 gallon bag and if the lid were able to accommodate the 13 gallon bag you could really stuff it to its full potential. We found the 30 gallon bags to work best. Summary: Personally I like the can. I am able to overlook the flaw with the sensor sensitivity given all its other great features. This is the only sensor lid trashcan I have purchased so I have nothing else to compare it with. If I had a location that did not see traffic I would have given a much higher rating, but the nuisance opening and closing is a big detractor from its overall appeal. Not sure I would buy again just due to the sensor issue? One last note. The larger capacity sounds great and it is, but if you put something stinky in there you will be changing the bag anyway. The only way you would fill to capacity is if 1) you produce a lot of trash, or 2) you don't throw stinky stuff in there. This can would be great for a large family! Hope you find this helpful! I always read reviews and they have a huge influence on my choices so know I gave careful consideration to this review. ***1 YEAR UPDATE!*** after a year we are completely fed up with the sensor activated lid! Now the lid just randomly opens and closes. Sometimes the sensor would get dirty and cleaning would fix the problem but now I think the sensor is failing. Stick to a manual open lid, you will be much happier!!!

All in all, I like it and am glad that I purchased this trash can. The lid opens and closes well (at least on day 1). The will open when I walk too close to it as I pass by, but that’s to be expected when my arm gets too close to the sensor. The lid is all plastic— hopefully it will hold up over time. There is also a warning inside not to “wash the lid.” Um, that’s typically the part that gets dirtiest; so, I’m a little concerned about that warning. The version I received requires 3 D-size batteries (not included); apparently older versions required 4 D batteries. I’ll update this review if my opinion changes. So far, my only worry is with the lid. Update 21 Days Later: I love it. My concerns with the lid were a bit overblown; it’s relatively easy to keep clean with lysol and a paper towel. The lid stays up sometimes when the roommate uses it— not sure what he is doing, but it works perfectly for me! Battery life is unknown, but the first set of Energizers are still going strong. Capacity is amazing! I know that it’s not twice as big as the 13 gallon it replaced, but it seems like it holds double the trash. Update ~1 yrs later— the lid stopped working ... At first I could not find a replacement lid, but after a week of searching, I located it on the Internet, and a replacement lid is on the way for about $28.

I have got to say that this is probably the best Amazon purchase I have ever made. (And I shop almost every week on Amazon so that's saying a lot.) This item arrived right on time, well packaged and damage free. The set up could not have been easier. As other reviewers have stated, the way the bag flips back on itself with the security ring is ingeneous. No ugly bag hanging out of the can and no trying to twist the excess garbage bag material and squeeze it behind the can liner. You simply place the garbage bag into the can, secure it with the ring, then flip the bag ends back over the ring and into the can. Pop the top on and voila! no slippage, totally secure and a completely invisible bag. The top has a battery compartment in it that is simple and quick to use as well. It takes D cell batteries and the battery compartment is large and uses the old fashioned clip in clip out attachment which is about as simplified as you can get. (Remember the old battery compartments on toys from the 70's and 80's? it's like that.) Okay and the design is wonderfully sleek and fits right up against the wall so that it doesn't stick out into the room. It's classy and very upscale. Let me rave now about the way the flip top works. Once you approach the can with your garbage the lid opens at just the right pace. It doesn't spring open and it doesn't slowly open. It's perfectly timed. Same with closing. Once you have deposited your garbage, the lid quietly and gently closes. Want to put in a lot of garbage and not have it opening and closing all the time? Press the open button and the lid stays open until you press the close button. I'm excited as you can tell. I had been going around and around thinking of buying one from another manufacturer but the cost was almost $200.00. This is truly an incredible bargain for the money. I thought my husband would hate it, since he is the worlds worst critic but he is also going on and on about how great of a buy it is. Feeling angst... don't give it another thought. Listen, my ring is very sturdy but I know some reviewers have said that their security ring broke. If if your ring did break, a person could easily get a thin bunji cord that would serve the same purpose and would not effect the use of the can or the invisibility of the garbage bag. There is one caveat though, because the garbage bag edges flip over and back into the can, they may get some garbage on them making it messy when you go to remove the bag to take it out. I solved this problem by making sure the bulk of the bag was in the can and only flipping the very edges of the garbage bag back in. Works swimmingly!! Enjoy!!

I have never been interested enough in a trash can to write a product review until this one! This trashcan really has a lot of great features at a decent price. The first reason I choose this trashcan is for its larger capacity. The majority of kitchen trashcans I found where in the range of 13 gallons. From experience, these end up needing to be changed almost every day and the narrow width of these cans means I have to yank and fight to get the bag out of the trashcan, even when they are not that full. For instance, if I throw away a gallon bottle or the packaging from raw meat, these containers are typically too wide to fit into a standard kitchen trashcan without cramming it in tightly. Plus, when it’s time to pull out the trash bag, it usually ends up ripping or leaking because of the cramped space. In contrast, this Nine Stars trash can has a 21-gallon capacity so I only have to take out the trash a maximum of twice a week. With the wider opening, I can throw in larger containers. Thankfully, when I empty the trashcan, it’s wider capacity means I can quickly pull the trash bag up and out, without it ripping and without me having to stick my hand inside the gunk inside the trashcan. The style of this trashcan also influenced my decision to buy. It’s a sleek silver finish that should probably look well in any kitchen. I love that the design keeps the actual trash bag from being visible and the included ring keeps the trash bag from slipping down. Family have spilled drinks and other sticky gunk on the interior of the trashcan lid, as well as the outside. These are easily cleaned with a little dish soap and water (or a kitchen cleaning product), I was relieved to see that the finish was not impacted by cleaning. Of course, the best feature of this trashcan is the motion activated lid. I love not having to fumble with a trashcan lid while carrying a bunch of trash in my hands, especially when cooking. At Christmas, all my visiting family were obsessed with walking up to the trashcan and having it open for them, it was like the release of a new iPhone. So far, I’ve had this trashcan about 6 weeks and haven’t needed to change the batteries yet. I have to admit it seems very sturdy, since I have dropped the lid a few times and no problems have occurred. Even though I was weary about the price at first I am glad I purchased this, it has saved me a lot of time and hassle.

I love the large size of the 80L, versus the smaller 40L version, as it cuts down on trips to the dumpster. Easily to assemble and works great. It's exactly what I needed to organize my kitchen. Build quality is solid. Only had it for a bit, so I can't speak to it's durability, but the lid sensor works flawlessly so far.

I've been using it regularly for a few weeks now and it works very well. Contrary to a number of other comments about how sensitive the sensor is, I've had no problems. In fact, I have to hover over-top the can to get it to open... definitely not opening whenever anyone walks by. Also, for those debating the larger size versus the mid size - the large one is good if you have the space in your kitchen and it allows for the full use of your average black garbage bag. If you go with the mid-size one, you'll find the opening is smaller than ideal and when you pull the black bag out, there's more space to be filled. If you have have decent space in your kitchen, go bigger.

Lo ame, tenemos 1 mes usandolo y simplemente lo amamos. Tiene un excelente tamaño, el bote de basura que teniamos antes era alto pero angostos y se llenaba aprox cada 2 dias asi que usabamos muchas bolsas. Con este bote sacamos la basura de 1 a 2 veces por semana, dependiendo si tenemos reunion en casa o no. El sensor si esta algo sensible y se abre con simplemente pasar a un lado del bote, pero no nos molesta eso.
