Great for the price
All moving parts work smoothly without slop. Optics are clear and focus well. Good enough for casual use by landowners and owner-builders. Contractors will of course want something better, and surveyors will want better than that. This instrument is unique, although it bears a superficial resemblance to a lesser-known brand. Compare this to the David White transit that's in this price range, which is sold under many other brand names. This leads me to believe that the manufacturer exercises some control over design and manufacturing, instead of just putting their name on someone else's product. The e-commerce pledge: To improve the reliability of online reviews, I will post a review of every product or service of significance I purchase, and update the review should my opinion change.

Disappointed!
Very disappointed in the build quality. My father purchased this exact same tool 20 years ago. It is the same brand with same functions and everything only built tougher. His still works great but I don't expect this one to last 20 years if it gets the same use. Just shows how quality suffers from going china! It used to have 4 screws for leveling and two bubble levels. This one is much harder and more time consuming to get transit level with 3 screws and one level! The tripod IS easier to use with the cam locks than the old one with wing nuts but the quality is not there. Just looks and feels like a toy. I'm only going to use it to build a fence and level a concrete slab So I'll keep it for now but I wouldn't buy this product expecting to do big projects all the time.Update. 3/5/23. Got this thing out again to build a retaining wall. It has not been used in years. It’s still a POS! I’ve been trying to calibrate the levels for hours now with no luck! Too bad for new buyers because the price has went up over $150 more! Going to borrow my friends laser.

Instrument great but documentation lacking
Worked great right out of the box. So far I am completely satisfied. The documentation that came with the instrument was completely inadequate however. There was no information about reading or using the grade rod. More detailed examples would be good.

Tons of free-play and slop.
2015 - Like others have said, it came with a tri-pod and a 13 ft measuring stick, neither of which were described in the transit details so I did not know if they were going to come with it, at that low price. Maybe it was a mistake, but we got a great deal. Everything looks very heavy duty.Update 8/12/19. My mistake for buying this when I did not need one and now I'm way over the 3 year warranty period. I finally started using it but there is a ton of free-play in the scope. You can not keep the bubble level because the end of the scope moves up and down because it won't tighten down. My readings can change 3/4 of an inch at only 25 feet away because it wiggles up and down so much. The phillips screw on the bottom is all the way tight so there is nothing I can do since it won't tighten anymore against the bearings. It rides on a spring but when you turn the scope a different direction, it moves a little up or down and sticks instead of returning to the same position, so you have to re-adjust the level of it every time you touch it. It should not wiggle up and down like it does. I called the manufacturer and I will pay to send it in. They said they would give me a quote on fixing it. I will post an update later on what they find out is wrong with it and if they charge me for the defective device that I received. Hopefully they will see that it was always defective and replace it for free.

I suspect using it as a level or to line a straight line might be fine but to turn angles even for a short distance
I bought this unit with the expectation that I could turn an angle at least to the nearest degree. I found the scale difficult to line up and impossible to turn a 90 degree angle twice and hit near the same place. I was a surveyor for 16 years and ran a K&E transit, so I know how to read the vernier.I suspect using it as a level or to line a straight line might be fine but to turn angles even for a short distance, leaves a lot to be desired. I am going to check the literature and see if there is an adjustment for the horizontal movement. If successful, I will update this review.
