Q: You would only use this when the furnace was not in use, correct? During the warmer months...

I have used the furnace with the fine mesh screen. It did not cause the furnace to shut down. So when you get a chilly day or night you can turn the furnace on with this screen in the vent.

Q: Since it is made of stainless will it rust ever?

We live on Knotts Island and everything rusts! But these haven't. Yet.

Q: Are they easy to remove and put back in? Are they safe for the winter use while the furnace is on our would they restrict air flow too much?

They are easy to put in and out. When it was really cold in the winter the steam froze and did restrict air flow my furnace gave me a warning then I removed it. But that only happened once.

Q: Is the screen mesh small enough to prevent ants from entering and other smaller insects?

Ants - no. Other small insects - probably.
