What are the secrets to making a company enduringly valuable? 7 Powers breaks fresh ground by constructing a comprehensive strategy toolset that is easy for you to learn, communicate and quickly apply. Drawing on his decades of experience as a business strategy advisor, active equity investor and Stanford University teacher, Hamilton Helmer develops from first principles a practical theory of Strategy rooted in the notion of Power, those conditions which create the potential for persistent differential returns. Using rich real-world examples, Helmer rigorously characterizes exactly what your business must achieve to create Power. And create Power it must, for without it your business is at risk. He explains why invention always comes first and then develops the Power Progression to enable you to target when your Power must be established: in the Origination, Take-Off or Stability phases of your business. Every business faces a do-or-die strategy moment: a crux directional choice made amidst swirling uncertainty. To get this right you need at your fingertips a real-time strategy compass to discern your true north. 7 Powers is that compass. Good Read for founder CEOs or professional CEOs
Good Book on getting to know and understand the nature and details of moats that would fence off competition, in case competition is un-avoidable. I would recommend this to any mid-stage and later-stage start-ups, and companies beyond that stages, but not necessarily early-stage start-ups as they should not fuss too much before ensuring product market fit.

Best strategy book since Sun Tzu (seriously)
This book isn't particularly polished compared to most hardcover business books. It looks like the author basically took the lecture notes from his course and published them as a book. And what a book it is! The content is pure gold. Unlike the "fad of the month" or "if it worked for me it'll work for you" or just plain "gee whiz" of many books on business strategy, the concepts and method set out in this book are highly skeptical and therefore thoroughly rigorous. The ideas feel like they've been tested in the most challenging competitive environments (the author refers to his work at the most senior levels of Netflix). The book is not always easy to absorb, and tying everything back to an equation of economic value may be more interesting in theory than in practice (the author assigns great value to this Theory of Everything integration), but the book is worth a dozen of the books churned out by business strategy consultants. If you're interested in or must understand business strategy, this lesser-known book is a must-read. It has earned a place in my permanent collection, next to Sun Tzu.

The single best business book I've ever read
I've read a lot of business books and worked as a consultant at McKinsey... Nothing even comes close to this book in offering as succinct and proven model for achieving returns in business. Look at who's reviewed this book, many of the best strategists and business operators of the century.Hamilton has worked alongside many of these people to hone his view on business strategy and how it delivers returns to business. Simple, but not simplistic, this is a marvelous read and a must for anyone interested in strategy, business and technology.
