A Clear Favorite: My Go-To Primer for Crafting Versatility and Reliability
As someone who regularly dabbles in both woodwork and mixed media painting, finding the right primer has always been a bit of a balancing act. I want something that adheres well, doesnโt yellow, and doesnโt add unnecessary opacity to my workโespecially when Iโm layering over natural textures or working with translucent paint effects. After trying several options, I landed on FolkArt Clear Primer, and I havenโt looked back since. I remember the first time I used it. I was prepping a collection of flat river stones for a series of miniature mandala paintings I planned to gift for the holidays. Normally, rock surfaces can be trickyโtheyโre uneven, porous, and sometimes slick in spots. But this primer handled it beautifully. It brushed on smoothly, dried to a subtle matte finish in under 15 minutes, and created a surface that felt just tacky enough to hold my acrylics without sliding or beading. Since then, Iโve used it on everything from wooden keepsake boxes and ceramic planters to canvas panels and even rigid plastic ornaments. The versatility is no exaggerationโthis stuff really does bond well to just about anything. Itโs become a staple on my shelf not just for how reliably it preps surfaces, but because itโs so simple to work with. No overpowering odor, no chalky residue, and no stress. Hereโs what stands out to me: โข It plays well with almost any surfaceโwood, metal, ceramics, canvas, you name it. Iโve even had success using it as a sealant layer in a pinch. โข Application is painless. The consistency is smooth, not too runny or thick, and it spreads evenly with a standard brush or foam applicator. โข It dries fast. Iโm often able to move to painting in 15โ20 minutes, which helps when Iโm batch-processing multiple pieces. โข The adhesion is solid. My paints stick confidently afterward, and I donโt have to worry about peeling or flaking down the road. โข Itโs affordable. Considering the quality and results, the price is extremely reasonableโespecially for how far one bottle goes. The only thing to note is its transparency. Because itโs clear, it wonโt cover up any underlying color or pattern on the surface. Thatโs perfect when I want the natural texture or hue to show through (like with those river stones), but not ideal if I need a uniform, blank slate. Also, for best results, I still take a few moments to prep the surfaceโa light sanding or quick wipe-down can make all the difference. All in all, FolkArt Clear Primer has earned a permanent spot in my art supply stash. Itโs dependable, user-friendly, and incredibly versatile. Whether youโre just starting out or have been crafting for years, itโs one of those quiet heroes that elevates your projects without getting in the way.

Very good primer for 3d prints
I bought this to use for 3d printed items to prime before painting and it works amazingly!! It dries completely clear even though it starts out as a milky type color. It has good coverage and leaves a matte like texture so that acrylic paint will adhere well. It has a good thickness and isnโt watery. Good size and amount for the price!

Exactly what I needed
This stuff is fantastic. I am using it for priming plastic figures before painting with acrylics and it works great, no sanding required and the paint sticks perfectly and goes on smoothly. I wanted to leave parts of the pieces the original plastic color so traditional opaque primer was a no-go, I was so happy to find this stuff from a brand I trust. It doesnโt alter the texture of the piece and dries quickly. It has a semi-mat finish.

Good for artists
Super nice primer, used on some acrylic markers drawing I did on a binder and it's holding very well. No smear and nice finish.

So far so good
I feel like this was basically Elmer's glue, I'll come back if durability isn't great. It's not waterproof, but the varnish I used is so I'm hoping it's good. Very thick. Not too glossy, but I assume you're going over it anyway. Covered well. Sticky. The size is way more than I need. Good quality.

Paint on easy, dries clear
I use this to quote 3-D print prior to painting them with acrylic paint. It paints on very easily, dries clear, and leaves a nice surface to paint on. Even the areas I wind up not painting look nice and feel smooth. Super easy clean up with water. Sometimes takes multiple coats to fill in small cracks and voids in the print, but it paints on very easily. Iโm very happy with the results.

Won't stick if water gets on it.
Sticks great to plastic and rubber. Used it to keep rubber on safety glasses. A good glue-like sealer. But, I put water on the glasses to clean them and the primer turned back to white and stopped holding and peeled right off.
