Can't control an RX-V485 receiver
So, I tried all of the pages of suggested magic codes to control my RX-V485 (what an awful task that was) and none worked to control the volume. I have an older control that works to control the volume, so I'm forced to use two controls now, but at least I can control the DirecTV box (the buttons on my older remote had worn out)

Nothing wrong with this remote. The problem is DirecTV's "tech support."
Okay, here's the thing. This remote didn't work when I got it. I called DirecTV (after following directions on their help page) and had a long, repetitive conversation with their rep. Understanding was, to put it mildly, difficult to achieve. After walking me through several steps, SEVERAL times, he claimed I had a bad remote. Even though he knew I got it from a third-party, he had a new one shipped to me for free (good on him). It arrived today, and IT DIDN'T WORK!!! Ended up talking to a tech rep AGAIN, which was remarkably (maybe not so remarkably) similar to my previous experience. But I took an extra step: While talking to her, I Googled "setting DirecTV remote for RF." (I have an RF receiver, which I LOVE, btw.) Following instructions I found THERE, I had the remote working in a couple minutes. I then used the same technique on the remote I originally bought here, and presto! I now have TWO functioning remotes. The method I found online differed substantially from the advice I got from TWO company "tech support" people. I say buy this puppy, and then go online to set it up. DON'T go to the DirecTV site, just Google it. You'll be glad you did.

These RF remotes are way better, definitely buy over IR-only
We always had trouble with our living room layout of the remote being just too far off angle to work on one side of the couch. RF solves that problem, it works anywhere in the house. These are the exact same remote except the RF ability. Two things to keep in mind I figured out after buying (but absolutely wouldn't stop be from buying again): - Your receiver is switched to ONLY RF mode when switching over, it will no longer take IR - that means your original remote is not a spare you can use at the same time, you'd have to switch back. This only matters if you're buying this and expecting to end up 2 simultaneously working remotes (*and* this one using RF, you DO have 2 IR remotes ordering this, since it does both). These are so cheap though, I just ordered 2 to have both RF, since we habitually "lose" the remote (if you have a toddler, you understand). - Toddlers will now change your channel more. Before, with IR, it had to be pointed at the receiver...not anymore! Be prepared for your toddlers, dogs, cats, etc. to change your channel even if this thing is pointed straight into the couch.

If you have the HR34-700 receiver, call customer service before trying to use it.
Dog chewed off battery cover and component switch off old, identical model remote which still functioned but needed replacement, so I ordered here. This was for my livingroom. It arrived a few days later. Looks great, and the Directv light at the end of the remote lights up, but the receiver doesn't respond.Tried resetting the receiver, still nothing. Tried new batteries. Still nothing. It works in master bedroom for its receiver, but not the livingroom's, which is where I wanted it for the RF function. Will keep it as an expensive IR model, but it is useless for the purpose it was purchased, and not worth the effort and expense of return.EDITED:After contacting Directv's wonderful customer service, got it to work for living room TV in 10 minutes. This should have been 1st instruction, as the rep said owners of the Geni DVR receiver almost always have to be walked through additional steps to function. One star removed due to having to find this out myself rather than stated in instructions.

Great replacement remote that worked out of the box
When our remote died after being dropped on a table, I thought I would have to call DirectTV and spend a small fortune buying a new remote. Out of curriosity I checked Amazon to see if someone might be selling a used remote. I was surprised that new remotes were being sold for DirectTV and at a very attractive price. When my remote arrived It bought I would have to do some type of setup to make it work but for me it worked right out of the box. I was able to program my TV through the setup on the cable box so the remote would control my Sharp TV as well. It took no time at all and everything has worked great since. What a nice surprise to find this remote for a cheap price, and have it work out of the box. The remote is the same one that came with my DirectTV and I can't recommend this replacement enough.

Strong RF signal
I house setup has the loft right next to a bedroom with just a wall in-between. Not wanting to have to get another TV box just for the bedroom I was able to buy this remote that is able to communicate with the DirecTV box through the walls! This was the perfect solution to my problem. It was a very easy setup to change over the DirecTV box from receiving IR signals to RF signals. Then I just had to reprogram the remote to work with my devices and the setup was as simple as that. Been using the same remote now for 2 years and could not be any happier with this purchase.Pro's:Battery life of this controller is the same as a normal IR remote which I was very impressed with.Same as IR remote with the added feature of going through walls.Great buildCon's:Nothing so far. Been using for 2 years without issues.

Why settle for just IR ?
I have ordered a few of these, outstanding remote and with the RF capability. Most recently the one I ordered arrived, I programmed my TV code in and all appeared fine. I later found that the TV Input button didn't work (didn't even light up when pressed). My first thought was "Oh Well, not worth the hassle of sending it back, may as well trash it". Then I thought what the heck I am going to contact the seller and see if they will replace it. The next morning I had a response (SATELIZ INC), had me enter a code 960 to enable the button. Low and behold it worked, saved me the money and/or expense of getting a replacement. As they have become worn or failed I have replaced all of my remotes with these RF units, why pay for an IR replacement when you can have IR and RF capability for a low price.Worth every penny, and outstanding customer service to boot !
