Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros (Nintendo Switch)

Pretty cool for the price, and something to trust with Nintendo's name behind it. Nice controls with rubber buttons. I do wish it had SMB3 as that would make it a lot more replayable. It has USB-C charging which is cool as usually these things take basic batteries and they die and I can never be bothered to use it as it keeps wasting the batteries, but this is simple and easy charing. And because it has an internal battery it is basically always on, you just turn the screen off and come back paused exactly where you are. Also the clock mode, it could essentially be used as a static clock if you leave it charging. The cool thing is mario and sometimes luigi run around at the bottom and smash the digit blocks away when the time changes. They sometimes do rare stuff like moonwalk and go down the pipe into a water world. But whats cool is you can hit buttons to spawn enemies and the legit AI tries to avoid them which is kind of cool. Not bad for £40. I wish there were more of these things. Having something completely standalone with no updates, logins, accounts, connectivity, just turn on and go is rare these days and actually quite refreshing. The thing is tiny as well so could easily be in a pocket as its at least 75% smaller than the average sized phone, it fits entirely in my palm for example. No headphone slot but you can turn the volume all the way down, it also has brightness adjustments and a battery indicator.

Amazing! I’m too young to remember the original but I very much enjoy the 2020 re-release. The console is super cute and I was a little shocked at first how small it is. It’s not larger than a pack of cigarettes. Comes with three preinstalled games: Super Mario, Super Mario 2 and Mario Ball. The console is made of well, let’s say medium quality plastic which probably would easily crack if dropped but I am not going to check. The backlit LCD is of good quality with 10 levels of brightness. The viewing angles are a little poor but I think overall this is true to the LCDs of that bygone era. The sound is good too with 10 level adjustment as well and overall the device feels like literally taken straight from the 80s. Once you get bored of playing Mario you can set it to the Time mode which will display fun animations and change the colour scheme based on the current time of day. The console is charged via a USB-C port and while it comes with a cable you will need to purchase a charging brick separately if you don’t have one already. I guess the only thing I’d love to see on this thing is a headphone jack because if you want to play this in bed without waking your family in the middle of the night the only option is to turn the sound off completely which is a shame because I think the experience would be complete with being able to listen to the iconic Mario theme via earphones. Overall I think it’s a wonderful little console for the price and Nintendo kicked it out of the park with this one. If only they would bring the GameBoy consoles back that would be fantastic..

How technology has come on. When I was a kid the idea of having these two mario games in a handheld was impossible. The unit feels great in your hands. The buttons feel great to use too. It’s easy to pick up and play for a few mins, play, then put down and can pick up where you left off later. There are two Mario games built in and a more traditional game and watch juggling game. All of them are great fun. The screen is great too. Very sharp for the size. Battery lasts well and the clock is fun to watch run through. The only improvement I think could be made is the clock staying on to have it as a display on your desk. As it stands it auto switches off pretty quickly which is a shame. But I love it. This is great and recommend it.

I didn't get this device when it was first released by nintendo, so i was amazed to see Amazon EU still have these in stock. The device arrived safely, well packaged and in perfect condition. Im pretty sure all the other reviews have covered what this device is and what to expect. Retro gamers will be happy with this for sure. Quality is top tier as per Nintendo. Great screen, great controls and three awesome games. Highly nostalgic. The only concern i had was the amount of time this device would have been sitting in a warehouse with a depleting battery. The battery was discharged on arrival but a full charge and it seems to be good. Currently testing the condition of the battery by giving it a few run throughs as i play the games… so far, so good. (Li ion batteries can become degraded and a safety circuit can prevent further charging as a safety measure if a device if left long enough in a discharged state :/)

Growing up I had the Zelda duel screen Game & Watch that I loved so I pre-ordered this delightful piece of nostalgia on the day it was announced. The unit has the look and feel of the classic 80's hardware albeit with the updated d-pad on the left side. I have not played Super Mario Bros in years and the game is a perfect replica of the NES original and plays very well on the hardware. The button placement is a little awkward for people with larger hands, being at the bottom of the unit, but I quickly got used to it. USB-C charging is a nice inclusion when some manufacturers are still including obsolete micro-USB on similar size/price devises. The inclusion of the real SMD2 is a nice addition since it was not released outside of Japan in 1986, and is tough compared to the first game. The unit also includes an updated version of the 'ball' the very first Game and Watch game, which is a fun bonus and fun to play in short bursts. For anyone that grew up at the time of the original NES I don't think they will be disappointed. Really hoping we get a Zelda one to celebrate 35 years in 2021 with Legend of Zelda and Zelda II The Adventure of Link.

When this was first announced a lot of people complained it was expensive for a device that only lets you play 3 games. They pointed out devices that cost much less and that had 150 games on them. They pointed out that the original Game and Watch cost £14.99. I think these people forget a few things. They forget that a few good, classic games to choose from is better than 150 shoddy ones. They forget that £14.99 in 1980 is £65 in 2020 due to inflation. They forget people like me, in my late 30s, who last played computer games in their teens, who don't want to have to download gigs of updates, do in game purchases, or any signing into an account or subscription nonsense. I've got 20 minutes to kill, I want a device that's ready to go, small. simple but enough to keep me occupied for that time. The reason it loses a star is due to the following reasons: * Mine had a couple of dead pixels in the middle of the screen - not a massive deal, I'll return it and get another one, but if you're a collector and fire it up for the first time in a few years, you might be disappointed. * The A / B buttons should be hard plastic I think - rubber for primary controls feels weird and not as responsive (unlike the D-pad) * The unit is Made in China - one of the reasons I thought it was £50 was because it would be made in Japan and carry the labour costs associated with that. I'm disappointed it's not.

For me this is a great little handheld game that you can pick up for ten to twenty mins of fun. Screen quality is good, just check for any dead pixels, mine was fine. Controls and speaker are fine. It does not have the stand built in. But are you or your children really going to use this as an alarm clock? I've seen a few complaints about the G&Ws price and size. Expensive? Maybe depending on your view point, but cheaper than tracking down an NOS/MIB original G&W from the early '80s. Fifteen quid back then was expensive for your parents to fork out. But they did. Just as we are all doing now for the modern iteration. Thats what this is, a new modern version of the old G&W. I don't think Nintendo ever stated this was to be an exact re-issue. It does what it does very well. Yes the screen may be small to tired middle aged eyes. I know because i'm tired and middle aged. But again, these were aimed at children in the early '80s. Buy one for your kids for xmas, have a five minute go on it, then let them take over.

Happy memories of playing games like Donkey Kong on devices like this in the 80s, this Gen X’r felt inspired to buy this upgraded version (charges via USB and has 3 games). I’m not into gaming at all. The last game that had me hooked was Sonic in the 90s. I’m so glad I bought this. Been playing both SMB and SmB 2 (lost levels) daily. I’m getting pretty good. I’ve even watched a few YouTube videos and checked a few maps. Can’t believe how much I’ve been geeking out about it. I find it’s been helpful to distract my mind from other stressful situations and I seem to be able to play a game or two and walk away, so it all under control. Basically, I’m very happy I bought it and it has stood up to almost 2 months of vigorous playing.

A good way to relive the game and watch times. It server also as a digital clock.
