The cofounder of Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, and Walking Papers shares what the hard-knock rock life has taught him about how to be a good dude (in spite of it all). One wouldn't usually turn to a veteran of Guns N' Roses for advice on how to live, but Duff McKagan is not a typical rock musician. As chronicled in the New York Times bestseller It's So Easy (and other lies) , Duff got sober at thirty, went back to school, got smart about money, fell in love, became a father, and got his life back on track. Through trial and considerable error, Duff has learned to strike the balance between family and work, travel and contentment, financial aptitude and sacrifice. In How to Be a Man (and other illusions) , Duff takes the reader into the life of an international rock musician and shares, with disarming candor and humor, the solid life lessons he's learned along the way to success and fulfillment in both his family life and his career. From hard-won advice on such basics as starting with a strong base and staying humble, to techniques on how to stave off depression and transform darker impulses into something productive, How to Be a Man is the ultimate guide to rocking life—not as a dissolute train-wreck "rock star," but as a man destined for success and longevity. Review: Great read!!!! - I love this book and I am a woman. Duff is awesome and appears to be such a humble and down to earth guy. The book offers all kinds of tips and stories. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Review: Guide to living life right by a famous Seattle 4 Stringer - Fantastic, practical, humorous, and all around sound advice from a guy who’s lived one Hell of an interesting life. Who else could thank Marshawn Lynch, Steven Tyler and Old Spice in their acknowledgements? Breezed through this in a couple of days and I can’t wait to read his first book. This book was entertaining and insightful, highly recommended!

A Year in the Life of a Traveller
I'll start by saying that this would have been more appropriately titled How to be a Good Traveler as this book seems to be a year in the life of Duff as he travels the world as a rock star and all around cool guy. This isn't a complaint at all. The conversational tone of the writing makes this a very compelling read. This is especially true if the reader is invested in Mr. McKagan from his previous book or his rather large catalog of music. The pace is fast and this man definitely comes across as someone you would love to have a beer with if only he was able to enjoy such a beverage. I've seen a few complaints regarding the lists he included in this book. But I would disagree sharply. One of my favorite ways to discover new books, movies, or music is to learn what has inspired the artists that have inspired me in the past. In this light, the two lists are the most valuable passages in the book. I've already been out looking to add some of Duff's recommendations to my library. I'm hoping a few of them click and broaden my horizons that much more. And as far as the entries that I'm already familiar with, who doesn't enjoy having a rock legend validate their taste in music. I just wish I had a way to debate a few of his choices that I disagree with in the list. Most of the real autobiographical ground was covered in his previous book. But if the future holds a series of updates on this very interesting man's life in the form of books like this, count me in all the way. I'm looking forward to that almost as much as the potential reunion of the Appetite era Guns 'n Roses that this book shows isn't as entirely impossible as once thought. Write on and rock on Duff McKagan!

Inspiring!
I needed a change in the kind of books I was reading. Being a fan of GN'R I thought I would give this a whirl. Duff really showed you where he was and where he wanted to be. It was such an interesting read. I feel I know so much about this guy. I loved that he loves his family so hard. I loved that he seems to be an ordinary guy with a family trying to keep his home up on his own yet be a Rock Star at the same time. I was truly impressed with how he got clean and sober and I could see how much life truly meant to him. Thank you Duff, I enjoyed this book so very much.

Not too bad. But not a Must Read. Okayish book.
I listened to the audio book. It was an okay book. Not a must ready. Neither is it boring or worthless. It might be helpful to young guys to understand good values in life. In the book Duff talks about how he went from being a drug addict to being sober and from one night hookups to being devoted to his family. This message is repeated chapter after chapter, and it becomes repetitive by the end. If you are a well-settled married guy with a family, there is nothing new in this book, which you don't have in your life. If you are young guy wondering what things are of value in life - fame, family or pleasure - it would be useful to you.

Honest writing
4 stars because it was more than I expected from the bassist of guns n roses. Coherent, funny, honest. The transparency of friendships and marriage, drugs and rock n roll, heartache and overcoming personal struggles. It was written from a perspective of a man in love with his life. And it didn't glamourize the drug use. Good work Duff. Keep on going.

Wie immer amüsanter und sehr vernünftiger Schreibstil. Es ist immer wieder interessant, von Duff McKagan zu lesen. Hoffentlich kommt noch ein drittes Buch.

Just a great easy read
I loved this book and as a follow up to "it's so easy", it's perfect. First of all I love Duff's writing style. It immediately sucks you in and makes for very easy reading. Secondly I locked into the approach of blending the story of the challenges of a year on the road, with top tips for the modern person/ traveler. As a weekly traveler myself it's given me so much food for thought. I'll never pack shaving gel ever again...conditioner all the way now! This book was also perfectly timed in my life in many other ways. I wish I could thank Duff in person, as both books have inspired and literally helped me turn my life around. But as that chance may never come I'll just keep recommending them to all my friends. Ignore the haters, this book is great.
