Description
When the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Mieko's nearby village was turned into ruins, and her hand was badly injured. Mieko loves to do calligraphy more than anything, but now she can barely hold a paintbrush. And she feels as if she has lost something that she can't paint without-the legendary fifth treasure, beauty in the heart. Then she is sent to live with her grandparents and must go to a new school. But Mieko is brave and eventually learns that time and patience can help with many things, and may even help her find the fifth treasure.

Compelling story
It is a good book for non native English readers. My 4th grade daughter managed to read it with a little help. The story is quite short so mission accomplished.

A gentle book about a difficult topic
I read this book with my 7 year-old daughter for a parent-child book club. It deals with a difficult topic but in a gentle and compassionate way. The children in the book group all seemed to have enjoyed the book and understood quite a bit of its messages, which are multi-layered. It provided a wonderful launching point for discussions about friendship and loss and fear. It also is a gentle way to help children who are ready start to think about what happens in war.
