In the early '80s, Rasmus (Adam Pålsson) was glad to leave his rural roots for college in Stockholm - and the ability to embrace his gay identity. Having struck sparks with questioning Benjamin (Adam Lundgren), they'd find their union challenged by Benjamin's religious upbringing - and ultimately, by the looming specter of AIDS. This moving miniseries co-stars Simon J. Berger, Emil Almén, Stefan Sauk, and Marie Richardson; Jonas Gardell adapted his literary trilogy for the screen.

Excellent love story
Everything about this movie is very good. The two leads are incredible actors and the story is moving. A lot of flashbacks are used to tell the story and sometimes the chronology of what is happening a bit hard to follow in a couple of places. But for the most part - no problem. Now for my main complaint. This story aired on Swedish television in 2012 and in the UK with English subtitles either in 2013 or 2014. Why does it take until 2020 to be able to see this in the United States especially for such a quality production?

EVOCATIVE OF THE PERIOD, MOVING IN ALL WAYS!!
This Swedish TV miniseries is excellent. Moving story of two families affected by the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. As stated on the "cover blurb", a combo of ANGELS IN AMERICA and QUEER AS FOLK.Acting is wonderful, the telling of the story of the 2 main characters through glances of their back story is beautifully accomplished.I only wish there were more than 3 episodes!!

Something I'll never forget seeing
I've watched this on the BBC and online and will be buying this DVD. This series is by no means an easy watch, but it's not meant to be. It's the most heartbreakingly beautiful piece of TV I've seen in a very long time as well as an important piece of social history. I knew from the very first scene, which is bleak and hard hitting, that no punches would be pulled and I was right. This series stands head and shoulders above other pieces of work I've seen on the theme of HIV/AIDS. Unlike other 'offerings', it's not shmaltzy, sentimental or overly dramatic. It's honest, has some effective imagery and symbolism, but tells it like it must have been for so many people. I was only young when the first cases of AIDS came to light but vividly remember it. This series captures the time completely and shows how characters from a range of backgrounds formed a family that came through for each other when so many others didn't. You know from episode 1 that this family is going to dwindle by the end of the last episode. With many dramas like this, you'd stop watching at that point, but this series is strong enough to let you know the outcome at the very start, as it will take you on such a rollercoaster of emotions between its start and end. The characters are brilliant, in particular Benjamin and Paul. There are bits that will make you smile, like Rasmus' embarassing post-graduation ride home, the gang 'Vogueing' at the 80s disco, the wonderful Paul's sarcastic comments, and the nude sunbathing men surprising a boatful of tourists. It's also a beautiful love story. But be prepared to cry and also to feel angry. I expected to cry watching this, but some of the things that upset me were the smallest, most unexpected things - Bengt's cat, Lars-Ake struggling to help carry a coffin - proof that this is a beautifully crafted piece of television. The series would not have been possible without the books of Jonas Gardell (Love / Disease / Death), on which it is based. I really hope that these books become available in the UK as I would certainly read them. 'Don't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves' moved me immensely. I can't even begin to imagine how those who, like Jonas Gardell, were there through it all, must feel watching it.

A powerful and moving series
You do not have to be gay to be moved by this deeply powerful part drama from Sweden. I loved it so much that I bought the DVD.Set in the 80s when the AIDS crisis was at its peak, this drama deals with how one group of men dealt with love, loss, illness and ultimately death. I find it fascinating that the Swedish experience of AIDS was sadly all-too familar to what was occuring in the UK and the US. I lost many friends, and the attitudes of friends and family in this series were what I witnessed first-hand. There are scenes that will anger and sadden you, especially as some of the group become ill and die. SPOILER: Excellent use is made of symbolism;the Christmas parties at Paul's are symbolic of the 'Last Supper' portraits of Christ and his disciples. The sighting of a white elk by Rasmus's parents - they acknowledge it's uniqueness, but cannot come to terms with their son's sexual orientation.DEWTWG is also a love story. By the time we get to know Rasmus and Benjamin, we are invested in them. As young men are discovering their sexuality and who they are, this terrible disease strikes. Adam Palsson (Rasmus) and Adam Lungren are perfrectly cast. Also I must give Simon J. Berger, who plays Paul , a special mention. His wise and humourous portrayal was a highlight for me. When it all becomes even too much for Paul , I was deeply moved.Although both the UK and the US have both made dramas that have dealt wth the AIDS crisis (most notably 'Angels in America' the US/HBO in 2003), I personally felt that DEWTWG was more realistic and down-to-earth. Lacking a big budget, the smaller sets and natural settings makes it a drama that more people can relate to. There was not the senes of 'worthiness' that sometimes comes across with AiA. At the moment Scandavian drama seems streets ahead, and this wonderful series only underlines that. Recommended.

Beautiful gay love story
I bought this DVD because of the beautiful Adam Lundgren, who plays the sweet sad gay Benjamin in this story. I had seen him before in the Danish TV series "Blue Eyes", where he plays the cold-blooded neo-Nazi killer Mattias. It is a measure of his acting skills that he performs brilliantly in both these very different parts. I strongly recommend this film as a beautiful love story and also as a moving account of the disastrous effect on the gay community of the first appearance of the killer AIDS virus in Europe.
