It is about 2 inches less than the total length of the loom, or a loss of 4 inches when removed. So, just measure the loom and subtract 4 inches for a total. Don't bother with gauge it will not work, but this measurement does.

Yes definitely. You can knit any width up to 5ft. Set up in a 'small round loom' configuration for easy squares.

This loom is good for double knitting. You will use the U shape ends and the long rails together for the double knit. The 18", 28", 38" looms are designed for double knit also.
